So I had a problem the other day where yhe bike wouldn't start, bit like a flat battery. Turned over very slow and a clunk from the left hand side of the engine.
I put th battery charger on and had a cuppa. Went back out and it started straight up. It was fine for the rest of the day. Used it 3 or 4 times that day. I didn't use the bike the next day, following day went to start it and the same thing. I left it his time and used the car. So yesterday I had and look. Checked the battery and it's showing about 12.5v, checked the reg rec and getting between 560 and 580 across all 3 pins from negative and positive. The battery is about 8 months old as the old one died last winter. What else could it be? I can almost guarantee if I put the battery charger on it will start straight up, like it needs and extra kick of power? Last edited by gibbzy2k1; 06-11-16 at 02:02 PM. Reason: more info |

So charged battery for a bit and the bike fire straightaway.
Knocked it off amd got my multimeter out. Now battery showing 12.5 ish with bike off. Started and now showing between 13.4 and 13.5 at idle. Push it to 5500rpm and it drops to 13.14v. Any advice. Bike has now started twice no problem, going out for a few hours now and will try it again this afternoon and check readings. |

Check the ignition connector under the tank & the big yellow connector if your bike has a fairing. These can get furred up, and need a clean
Check the Reg/Rect fault finding thing in Geodude's signature Check your battery connectors. Mine lives on the Optimate when not in use, after I replaced a battery after less than a year. Could be a duff cell on the battery, you'll still get 12v off it, but not enough to turn it over. Sv needs a battery in tip top condition

Battery terminals should show 13.5 -14.5 volts with engine running and charging.Yours is under that and would result in battery losing charge whick seems to be what is happening. You need to investigate why that is------Loose connections,reg/rec,low alternator output,****e battery?

Sounds like a broken reg/rec if volts drop at 5k revs

I did the reg rec test from the youtube guide and it showed around 560 on all 3 pins. Thought that meant it was ok? I'll check it again this afternoon and run through the other test in the signature.

new results are in:
ignition off 12.70v ignition on it drops to 12.19v quickly idle 13.48 - 13.54v 5k rpm 13.14v I tried following the fault finding diagram and got to B where it said disconnect the stator? where do I do that? and how to test it? After the bike had been running for 5 - 10 mins i checked again and this time: idle 13.96v 5k rpm 13.68v I checked the RR the other day and had similar readings across the 3. could check it again now as its a bit warm and something came up. Its a TourMax RR if that means anything to anyone? |

That sounds wrong, and with the engine off shouldn't be caused by the reg/rec. Either the battery resistance is higher than expected, or there's something drawing too much current when the ignition is on.
My maths suggests that the voltage drop on a good battery would be about 25A, in which case something would be getting hot! Are you able to check the current being drawn with ignition on? Also, are you measuring the voltage at the battery itself, or somewhere else? If nothing is getting hot, then either the battery is dead (high internal resistance) or there's a high resistance between the battery and where you're testing it, e.g. the battery terminals. |

HI will double check the figures with ignition on and off. I was putting the metre on the battery terminals. Starting to get out of my depth with auto electrics...

So today I checked again. When at idle its showing around 13.9 - 14v as the revs increase it drops. I have check continuity between the r/r and all 3 came back around 490 - 500.
stator has check ok, not grounded that I could see and about 0.14ohms across all pairs. removed the -ve lead anc checked drain. with ignition on its about 0.4, with all lights on its 7.2. unregulated current from stator at r/r connector is about 27v, doesn't go up with revs either. would that suggest stator is at fault? cheers guys. |
