Anyone else had paint flaking on a K9 engine casing yet?
Cleaned my new sv sport today (thoroughly with lower fairings off) and could not believe the silver paint is already flaking off the left hand side lower crankcase area where the engine number is stamped. Protected the bike completely with acf 50 as soon as i got it - right hand side of engine is still perfect. Looks as if the casing was corroded before suzuki painted it. It is covered with small corrosion bubbles and has started to flake as well. No doubt my dealer will probably just paint it if they submit as part of a warranty claim. Anyone had similer experiences, not sure exactly which way to proceed on this! I feel i will probably end up painting it myself instead - anyone know a good match for this silver gloss finish colour? I was going to try and get some PJ1 silver paint as per previous posts but it seems to have now been discontinued. Any advice and help appreciated |

Thanks Scott,
If the dealer offers to replace the casing its not somthing i really want them to do as its a full strip down to the crank with everything out. I think just repainting with the best colour match would be better - just need to get best match possible for the silver finish. |

I'd be interested in the engine paint too. My K3 seriously needs some.

I think I got a pretty close match to curvy engine silver with 5 wheel silver and clear lacquer over the top ... but I could be totally wrong with what sort of silver it was...

Just take it back. My K6 was the same, and I wish I'd taken back.

A difficult one isn't it?
Problem is it isn't anything the Dealer can "solve", they'll all be the same even if they replace stuff, and I work on the principle that things are best left alone if possible. I have a Deauville and they went through a period of really bad flaking engine paint (thankfully mine's OK), a lot of bad experiences with dealers fitting new cases. I know it shouldn't happen, but it does, and unless it was really bad I'd probably go the re-paint route myself, but that's just me. Bike paint quality is poor these days (all sorts of reasons/excuses, but ultimately it's down to cost), but they get away with it............. ![]()

They get away with it because people won't pay for quality.
Choice of a £5k suzuki or a £6k trumpet, people will buy the suzuki. The suzukis made in 80s and 90s... some of those are in better nick than a 3 year old pointy ![]()

It's entirely cosmetic so hopefully they've biased the budget towards the more functional items!

Thanks to all for the replies so far.
Latest position is the sv is going in for it's first service in a week at which time the dealer is going to take photos of the area the paint is flaking off (all around left crankcase in region of engine number), and email them to suzuki for a response. Looks like the options (if passed by warranty dept) are: 1) Replace crankcase 2) Dealer will repaint the crankcase 3) Dealer will outsource to local "paintshop" I haven't decided yet if i will re-paint it myself. Have looked around but cannot seem to find a colour match in aerosols near to the original silver engine case finish. |
