It's Armed Forces weekend here in Cleethorpes and tomorrow, as part of the flying display, they are having a P47 Thunderbolt. This will be special for me because my Dad used to fly them in Burma and I've never seen one in the air. Sadly he passed last year otherwise he would have got a kick out of seeing/hearing one again. It has an 18 cylinder, 46 litre, 2600 hp twin row radial engine so it should make quite a noise.

AKA Jug, a beast of a thing.
Could carry the machine gun ammunition of two Mustangs and half the bomb load of a B17 |

Awesome aircraft - could out-dive anything ( mainly because of its 8 ton weight ) and had a big weapons load, its air cooled engine not as susceptible as water cooled ones to battle damage.

I attempted to take pictures but failed. Excuse #1: I have a problem with the lack of a viewfinder on a digital camera because in bright sunlight I can't see the screen. Excuse #2 After the recent crashes at air displays the aircraft have to fly further away from the crowd. Excuse #3 I'm a lousy photographer and I am totally outclassed by my camera(s).
The Thunderbolt had a lovely raucous engine note as it climbed into loops and performed sharp turns. I suppose a 46 litre engine is never going to be subdued. ![]() ![]() First pic is courtesy of Hull Daily Mail second is courtesy of Grimsby Telegraph. This is the P47D, my Dad flew this type plus the earlier "razorback" version. I don't know whether he flew the P47N (more power, more fuel and different wing shape), the "N" was more common in the Far East and Dad was flying in Burma. |

Good to see some pics of one in the air. The pilot's head in the first one gives some idea of its size.
Oh, and a digital camera with a viewfinder makes life so much easier. |
