Default Chain and Sprockets

Well my chain has finally got to be replaced after 9.5K miles.

So have decided to do it myself.

Any words of wisdom from those who have tackled this before?

(and don't do it is no good!)

change your sprockets at the same time

and start using an oiler or lots of lube

shout me if you need a dig out

try this link out its for a rear tyre but its close http://www.rahji.com/rearwheel.php3

the only difference is cut the chain or take out the link if it has one and get a soft rivit link to put it together with

if your just gonna do the chain it will take you about 20 mins tops,
( no dismantling whatsoever)
that includes a cup of tea

Should get atleast 20000 miles out of the original chain. What makes you think it's no good after only 9500 miles?

Garry

Got new sprockets as well and have got scottoiler (think it's not doing its job though)

Graham - I cannot adjust the chain any more - and 20K out of a chain seems alot!

The life of a chain really depends on how much and how efficiently it's lubed.

Rictus (fast, no compromise rider) got over 44k out of his last chain, because he used a Scotoiler.

9.5k is really quite dreadful and it means that the chain hasn't been attended to properly. However, it's your chain so it's entirely up to you.

I agree that 9.5k is dreadfull but my first chain went after 7.5k.I lube it twice a week but the 60 mile a day commute in all weathers seemed to take it's toll on the original item.I have replaced with a better quality chain and done 10k without needing to adjust it once!!!

Mines got a scott oiler on it and I check it regularly - go figure

I do 60 miles a day fast riding in all weather - like to think I look after the bike - but no way do I pamper it

I cannot adjust it anymore as it has stretched too much (well it may have a bit left but I don't trust it anymore as I seem to be having to adjust it after every ride (and it's not cos by wheel is undone!)

Besides which I want a shiny new one
