Default Re snorkelled and I prefer the sound...

Pulled the snorkel a couple of months ago and threw in a K&N filter. Rode around but could not tell if any performance difference. Certainly made a different sound tho'. (Rorty/farty)

Two days ago thought I would re-snorkel it because its going in for its 6000Km service tomorrow and also getting a Scorpion Can fitted.

Found that I really like the sound it makes now with the snorkel in and bike seems more responsive. The sound is more kind of Ducatti like and Purrs tunefully....even the throttle off induction sound seems sexier...

Can't wait for the Scorpion tho' ...

If you put a K&N filter in without altering the jetting at all then you won't really get any benefit. When you get the new can, bung the K&N back in and get it set up on a dyno as it will now be running lean, or see if someone knows the settings they have on a similar set-up. You could try the carb needle shimming but it'll only beef up the midrange a little, i.e. half a job.

Hey Johhny

The K4 model is fuel injected and I have ben informed the engine management system will adjust accordingly. I realised it was only half the job done when I threw in the K&N filter and that a better breathing can gave proper air / engine flow in combination with the filter.

I think they are putting it on the dyno anyway when they fit the can and I will ask them what the reason is tomorrow.

The K4's fuel injection system, like the K3, can only adjust a tiny bit. As soon as you de-snorkel or add a full exhaust or alter the bikes breathing then you will have to either remap with a yosh box, a powercommander or a teka box in order to get the most from your bike. The computer might as well not adjust on this bike.

Thanx guys.. I guess all will be revealed tomorrow.

Currently the bike has snorkel installed as per original and has K&N filter installed as per instructions.

Tomorrow the Scorpion will be added and I will see what they say about the dyno tune and if remapping is advised. I will do both if it proves necessary but I am only trying to gain a moderate performance improvement (not racing spec) but a major noise gain

Cheers

It doesn't really matter what gains you're after, if you alter the intake or exhaust to make it less restrictive then you'll make it run lean, so that has to be compensated for with the fuelling. If it runs lean it'll run too hot, and if you take it to the extreme you can get detonations. Adding a new can should give you more oomph everywhere, but without altering the pipework you'll probably still have the little midrange dip. Don't worry, you'll have plenty of noise! Welcome to the world of setting off car alarms....

Job done ... Scorpion fitted ...

For the record the mechanic remapped to accomodate the can and the K&N. He said it was about 5% adjustment in the low and mid ranges if that means anything to anyone ('cos it don't mean much to me).

Bike sounds & feels great.....just have to test it near some of those car alarms
