Default Sprocket questions

First off, my mechanic told me that I might be able to drop a tooth on the counter-shaft sprocket without buying a new chain. Does anyone know if that is true? I am not worried about the chain being old because it is like new. I only ask because it would save me a lot of money.

Secondly: for those of you who know, would you recommend going -1 in the front for starters in order to see if I like it as opposed to going -1 +1, or -1 +2 right off? Is that simply a waste of money? Has anyone done just this any gotten good results?

Post your opinions on the poll.

its ok answering questions but what is the question in reference too ????????

you are on about changing sprockets but for what reason

more oooomph or more fuel economy

1 less on the front = approximatly 3 teeth more on the rear

similarly 1 tooth more on the front approximatly = 3 less on the rear

1 tooth more front = slightly more fuel economy

1 tooth less front = slightly more go

the choice is yours

either way if the chain has a few mile on it and in the center of the adjustment planes you should get either options out of it for 1 tooth

Just do the rear. Go up two cogs to 46 and you'll love it if you're after faster acceleration. I've just done it and now the bike wheelies in first off the throttle and still touches 130 no problem (er, I would think so anyway ).

Don't change the front at all as this puts too much strain on the chain as it makes it trun through a smaller diameter. As regards the chain length, you just might get away with it if the adjusters are fully extended (you'll certainly do a 45 anyway) - though on a naked SV there's no problem at all.

Barty_Boy: When saying -1 +1, I was abbreviating down one tooth in the front, up one tooth in the rear. I am sorry that I may have seemed confused writing all that junk, but I was specifically referring to more pull of the line and easy wheelie potential.

I was asking because I just learned how to wheelie off the clutch last night, and now I feel that I don't need to change the sprocket, but I might still want to in order to achieve better acceleration.

I also spoke to a riding buddy who said there were other ways to achieve better acceleration which didn't pose the potential for front wheel lift-off when I didn't want it, hence the poll.

Where would you all recommend i get sprockets from, as i want to change to a 46 at the rear, but might as well change them both and the chain at the same time.

I changed to a 46 rear a few months ago, and i thought that was good... bike felt alot better for it, i am now considering going 1 down on the front too as i don't use the SV for long distances really...so i figure i may have more fun with the extra acceleration. Not yet mastered a wheelie off the clutch yet...l but i am trying (on private land of course).

If you don't want a top brand (Renthal, Talon etc) then these guys give excellent service:
