1) What grease for steering head bearings? - multi-purpose grease, CV Lith-Moly grease, Castrol LM grease (or other?)
2) How easy/worth is it to try and straighten a slightly buckled twisted wheel? Also, if a wheel has a scrape on the rim (25mm left to right, 3-4mm deep) is it still usable (i.e. file off the rough stuff and touch up with paint)? 3) Can forks somehow be structurally damaged i.e. non visible stressing etc, or is it more likely that if they have had a whack, it'd be pretty obvious? 2) take it to someone who straightens wheels, forks etc - they will advise whether it's feasible to repair or not. 3) Are they bent? If not then what is the reason for your suspicions? As above - if they're bent take them to someone who straightens and ask their advice.

Bought a complete Gixer K6 front end from a breakers today. Forks, yokes, calipers, lever, master cylinder, front wheel, discs and mudguard.
When I got there, the bike was pretty much stripped to the frame, and the front wheel wouldn't turn all the way. One of the discs was warped and as I was humming and ha-ing, he offered another front wheel which had straight discs on instead of the original. The other wheel he offered has the gouge in, so I said I couldn't really use it, was no good to him, so he gave it to me to use the discs off. So I have 2 wheels. Took them to the local bike shop and we put them on the manual wheel balancer where the wheel that was on the forks is bent (about 1/4" out) as is one of the discs. The other wheel is fine, however it has the gouge in. Local mech reckons the forks are fine, but I'm thinking if the front wheel is banged enough to bend the disc then could the forks have taken an impact sufficient to cause some damage that can't be seen with the naked eye? The breaker has said he will sort me with either another wheel or some cash back, but just beginning to doubt the forks now. Shame really cos they were a good price (or maybe this is indicative of the condition?). |

Put the brake caliper mount in vice, put a dial gauge on the end of the fork and turn the slider round. Difference you read in dial gauge will tell you if they're bent.
Couple thou is ok, runout spec is in manual. Any damage will be shown in this method. You could also bolt them up in yokes, spindle etc. undo caps and check for stiction but this is less reliable. 3 simple questions, a load of complicated answers ![]()

Here's a poor quality picture of the gouge on the 'good' wheel (no the doll's house in the background is NOT mine)

That's not too bad, I've had worse.
