Default Is the front axel supposed to be flush against the fork?

This may sound like a stupid question, but Is the front axel supposed to be flush against the fork? I had a new tire and disc mounted and when i put the wheel back on the axel is sticking out about a quater inch. This is causing me all kinds of clearance issues with the rotors....

Dude, sounds like you have a spacer missing. AS you look at the bike from the front, there shuld be a spacer on the left hand side of the wheel. The tip of the spindle should be flush with the fork leg outer edge

Are you referring to the hex end of the spindle? The hex end is normally a mill or so off the fork leg, if yours isn't, then undo the clamp bolt/bolts*, and bounce the front end up and down a couple of times, this should reset the forks parallel, then tighten the clamp bolt/bolts.

*Early curvys have two clamp bolts, later curvy and all pointys have one.

I am talking about the hex end. I have undone the clamp bolts, grabbed the front brakes and rocked the bike firmly. It didnt help.... THis may be off the topic but it could be related to my problem: Is there a difference in the left and right front brake discs? If so, how do i tell? (2000 SV650 is what im working on)

Im pretty sure im not missing any spacers. I looked in my clymer manual and i have all the spacers listed there. THere are only 3 all together, right? (including the one that goes throught the center of the wheel itself)

Left hand spacer, right hand is the spedo drive, one through the middle. All spacer go indside the forks and the hex end sits against the fork leg. The pointy end should be, as before almost flush with the right hand face of the right fork leg as you look at the bike straight on. As for as the rotors are concerned, they are the same. Have you got the wheel the right way round? Sorry, just trying all options here. Speedo drive should slot in on the large hole. Also the spacer in the center of the wheel should not be able to come out as its held in by the bearings.

Keep it coming and im sure we'll solve it...somehow!

I have two spacers on the left side. One cylinder one about 3 inches long and one shorter one that flares out on the end to cover the bearing. I have torqued the axel down to what my Suzuki manual says (48 lb ft) and neither ends of the axel are flush with the forks. I am only having a problem with the right side disc. It is dragging against the caliper. If i take it off, the wheel turns smoothly (no dragging on the left side).

So, the hex end is about 1/4" away from the fork leg. Is the 3" spacer flush with the fork leg, or does it stick out too? If it sticks out, I sometimes have this problem with my race bike. What I do is:

- Stick the spindle in loosely, with all the spacers etc in place

- Push the 3" spacer all the way in so that it is flush with the fork leg. You may need to use a flat head screwdriver

- Tighten the clamp bolts so the spacer is in the right place

- Tighten the spindle, and everything should line up fine.

If its just the spindle that sticks out, and the spacer is flush, it sounds like the thread either on the spindle or in the fork leg is mashed.

The spacer sticks out too. I tapped it with a screwdriver and it just put a small dent in it. I hate to say it, but i give up. Im just gonna have to take it to the shop
