Default Insurance prices and options... (longish)

Right, Gixer is just coming up to a year old so my insurance renewal has come through. I'm still thinking about a 2nd bike so I'll need a multiple bike policy, which means a change,

So here we go.....

Location is UB7, aged 43, 2 years NCB, passed test Sept 2002, bike(s) alarmed and kept in garage. All FC
  • 2004 GSXR600 K4 - £482 but knocked them down to £435

2 Bikes, keeping the GSXR and adding 2003 VFR800 £709

    Or 1 bike, upgrading to

    SV1000S (new) £435 (same as my 600!!)

    RR2/RR3 Fireblade (2002/2003) £644

    K3/K4 GSXR1000 £612

If I add an SV650 onto the above it shot up to £1100 !!

    SV650 (N or S) TPF&T £250 (cheaper than 2 bike policy)

I thought the Blade and Gixer thou were quite reasonable actually.... At those prices a litre sports bike could be on the cards

What ever policy you get.. make sure they have a personal injury policy and not just a legal expenses cover.. I am finding that out the hard way!

SO when you get another bike you have to pay for 2 insurances? even tho you can only ride 1 bike at a time.....

surely you should only pay for the bike with the highest group?

shame on the insurance companies, the deal is bum all the way.

you still haven't caught onto the fundamental rule for insurance companies?
They are all b*st*rds.
Even the relatively nice ones.

They exist, but when you have more than one relatively high value/risk bike then they're not worth it.

I asked "why so expensive ? I can only ride 1 at a time..."

While you are riding one, the other has the potential to be stolen, especially as you are not at home.. also, if both bikes are in the garage, there is the potential for them both to be nicked....

That's the reasoning behind it anyway....

Call me cyncial, but I think it's more along the lines of "you can afford 2 bikes, you can afford 2 policies."

I bet a 2 bike policy, Third party only (which rules out theft being a factor) would not be just a token amount over that for 1 bike, despite the fact that as you say, you can only ride 1 at a time.

Now Rictus has just insured two bikes and I think it cost him around £25 extra for the second bike.

I have thought about that. The SV Thou and the VFR come into play here, as they would both give the added benifit of a better pillion and more suited to touring. But I stil have to convince SWMBO that 2 bikes are a good idea. The additional cost of a used SV650 (or even a Thou') may still work out less than getting a K4 Gixxer 1000 or an RR2/RR3 'Blade.

2 Bikes would be more practical, and I do enjoy winding the Gixer up, but I have to think of how much pain I can sustain on a long trip (although standing up on the trains is even worse !!). I don't want to be half way back from the Alps and be in so much pain that I can't ride, but it isn't that bad yet....

so I'll just have to see how much money I have left when Nick's finished the bathroom (which is looking very good BTW).
