Default Boots a bit loose now ??

As some may know I had a bit of an off last thursday.

Coming back up the A3 2pm ish, dry clear, about 40mph or so.

in the fast lane, bang, down on the road, no warning nothing, when the world came to rest, shoulder killing me, left foot stuck under bike can't feel it.

people come over, lift bike off, foot has been trapped under 209kg of triumph and ground down the road, grinding away 3 layers of leather on the top of the boot. don't look good!

I do the once over check to make sure I haven't done anything to bad, no main bit all there.

I'm helped over to sit on the central barrier, head starts to go,images swim before my eyes, I ask to be laid down as that's where I'll be in a minutes anyway. just as I lay down the blood overflows out the hole in the top of my boot.

Ambulance arrives, I'm a little out of it by now so next I know the paramedic is wanting to cut off my lethers, no way! somehow he gets them off without cutting them, I pass out.

come round in Kingston A&E , world of hurt, normally I can focus and control most pain, but not this. Morphine, lots of, better, world comes back into focus, xrays, and straight up to operating room for emergency op.

they stop the artirial flow and amputate my small toe, taken up to ward, I fade away into a drug induced world all of my own.

I'm woken when the doc's come around the next day, what's the score ?

well, having dislocated my left shoulder twice and broken it once before this brake is just another in the same place so no treatment for that.

Left foot, ground away a good chunk of the top small toe gone, next one up broke and ground at the joint. no skin over the area left.
wound full of road grime, so loads of antibiotics.

Doc tells me he's going to have to operate again to clean the wound and see how to sort it out.

enter the world of pain, knowing that if I can manage the pain without drugs, I stand a better chance of getting out earlier, I refuse just about all the pain killers, it's not nice but managable, some of the lads come down to visit and I'm wheeled out for my nicatine fix, (you just don't know how much that means to me, at that time).

family and friends visit over the next few days, (special thanks to Sarj & Raf for the fag brakes, thanks guys) second op Sunday night, see doc Tuesday, meet plastic surgion from St georges Hosp, who will be operating on me, discuss options. op scheduled for thursday.

Early start, as I'm "nil by mouth" for 5am, I get up at 4.30 (well haven't had more than about 45min sleep in any one go anyway), get one of the nurses to help me outside for a fag and then back for a cuppa tea before 5, spend the rest of the day focusing on the management of the pain, still no pain killers, so looking good.

about 3pm a porter turns up to take me down, I ask if I can have a spinal bloke (bit like an epidural) and they agree, have that done.

Wheeled into the operating theater, introduced to the surgion, I ask if he minds if I watch the op, it's not normal, but then again neither am I.

Basically he does what we had agreed, removed the toenail and fillits the toe bone out, folding the skin flap over the wound, I ask a load of questions which he happily answers as he works, he has to take a skin graphed from my groin as the flap isn't big enough, DAM! (he'd already told me i'd be in for another week at least if he had to do that), he stitches up the graph, nice job.

Get back to the ward at about 7pm, Sarj visit to drop of some fags at about quarter to ten (good bloke).

rough night, still managing without painkillers for the most part.

Felling better about 3am, have a pot noddle, some pork scratchings & a brew. now that's better (well you try living on Hospital food!).

Doctors visit this morning, all went well, he's well happy, and as I've managed so well, they have deicided to let me home today, result.

So now I'm back, not fighting fit by a long way, but back nevertheless.

O, here's a pic I took before the last op.(could be a bit gory to some, so I've not posted the pic, just a link)

Cheers Mark.

All the best and a speedy recovery mate, couldn't stomach looking at the op myself.
Does you know what happened with the bike?

If I can get a boot on? I'm getting a pillion up to see it tomorrow (hopefully).

Not to bad on the damage front, seen some pics.

Cheers Mark.

Oh Sh!t. Glad that you're mostly in one piece and around to tell the tale. Any idea what caused it? Diesel or mechanical failure of some kind are the first things that spring to mind, but I'd expect your bike to be excellently maintained.

You're obviously on the mend and managing well...

... so enough of that - how's the Beast?

I do think that sometimes surgeons like to feel their skills are appreciated and not just the results. Kudos for showing an interest in his work.
I did a similar thing when I smashed up my leg as there was a little 'observation window' cut into my numerous plasters at the time. Had some great conversations with the surgeon (who I still think of as a bone mending GOD) who spent more time with me than anyone else on his rounds.

Sadly, since I have slowly become incredibly squeemish over the following years. To the point of giving the other 'students' a practical demonstration of what to do when someone passes out and falls off their chair during a first aid course!
Well, the guy was talking about crush injuries and legs n stuff... and I'm going to stop there as I have too good an imagination.
