Default Speedo dead but tach working

I recently bought a 2000 sv650. The previous owner changed the front tire and after reconnecting the tire the speedo did not work. The tach works fine. Is there a simple explanation for this. Fortunately I discounted this in the purchase price for the bike. Wondering if anyone knew anything that could cut dowm my troubleshooting time.

If it is the faired model then the speedo sensor is on the front wheel. If the wheel has been removed then the spigots on the sensor could have been damaged, this is a cheap item to replace, about £14. If it is an unfaired model I believe that the sensor is in the gearbox and I don't have any experience of that, sorry!

As Mariner says, check the drive ring first, the tangs aren't fragile as such, they'll not break spontaneously, but any carelessness on removing/refitting the front wheel can see them off easily. Failing that make sure the wiring is OK, I've repaired a couple of SVs that have had damaged wiring that has been trapped by the bottom yoke/lock-stops.

All 650s whether curvy or pointy, faired or naked, have the speedo driven from the front wheel.
