Default Fitting R&Gs - Engine Bolt Woes **Fixed - with Pics**

OK, thought I'd try to fit the R&Gs this arvo but after faffing about for about 30 mins, I've given up at the first hurdle! I don't have a torque wrench and am in danger of stripping the main engine bolt/my knuckles if I continue with my trusty socket set.

So it looks like it's "revert to type" for me (i.e. a cheque-book mechanic) and book it into the local guy to fit them for me (£40) unless anyone can come up with any brilliant ideas?

why don't you just spend the money on a tourque wrench and do it your self you can then use it for other things as well

You need 2 sockets, 2 short extentions!

Yeah - just two sockets will do - no need for a torque wrench to undo when I did them on my K4, though was never 100% happy with not knowing how much to tighten them back up again...

Find a hollow metal bar. Put it over your rachet, and the extra leaverage should do the trick.

Get a "breaker bar", about 10 quid from halfords, that should do it.

That said I had to cut the bolt off when I did my R&G's, b"£tard had seized completly

Or go and get the big torque wrench from Machien Mart, IIRC it's £15. Not as accurate as a really good item but it'll do for the job just fine, and is handy to have for wheel changes etc as well. If you ever get a better big-value torque wrench it'll make a useful breaker bar.

my dealer torqued mine for free! 40 quid is a stupid amount of money to fit those.

Yep.

Going to Halfords later to check out the cost of the tools required vs the £40 fitting fee - never thought of that approach!
