You can still get them cheap, despite the revival they've been going through for the last several years.
If you want a nice example, go along to bugjam (july, I think) at Santa Pod Raceway. They have areas for selling cars and vans.

I love bugs... Might not ever actually own one though I'd not want a classic though... Big tyres, flared arches, 4-exit exhaust, no front bumper...

I used to own one and thought they were outstanding fun. The only thing that was that there really is no room at all in them. The pedals are so close together that you have to be very precise when using them other wise you were almost guaranteed to stomp on two pedals at the same time. Also your shoulder is literally mm's away from the side of the car. So when trying to do a full lock steer you would have to do it driver training style and not cross your hands over, there just isn't room to do it.

Great fun though. Bought it for about £50 and sold it for £250.

fab cars, with style and character.

they sound really nice too

went to "run to the sun" a few years back in newquay. . . some great cars there.

my friend has a 1300cc yellow bug which he has added a turbo charger and other bits. cost him about 2 grand, in total, but the car is doing 13s on quater miles.

I had a 1971 1300 for about 5 years, great car full of character.

Unfortunately mine turned into a bit of a money pit, always had something wrong with it come MOT time, so it had to go in the end. Still pine for it even now 6 years on.....

If you're going to buy one, I'd suggest doing some research & buy Volksworld magazine. Find someone who knows a bit about the cars so you can take them with you when you go to buy, there are so many things you need to look out for which aren't necessarily obvious.

My worry is that if I got one, I'd never be able to stop messing with it... I can barely afford to do that with the bike If I do get a car this year, it'll have to be something utterly unlovable. Something lacklustre. Something utterly, utterly uninspiring.

An Astra, then.

An interesting response.

The Volkswagen Beetle is far greater than the sum of it's parts. A very rare thing.

Flawed, but charming.

The original is a little old now for everyday use.

A story to tell...A few years ago an old Air Force buddy of mine went to a car show. VW had brought 3 old style brand new Beetles back from Mexico as a bit of a novelty item for their stand. my mate goes into a VW dealer to buy a Golf GTi and there is one of those Beetles! For Sale!!! He buys it instead. Next week he is posted to Germany which is fine as the Beetle is LHD. Goes around europe in it and sells it there...and enjoyed it he did too.

You don't need horsepower to have a laugh.

Brilliant little project cars. One of my best friends (who knew nothing about engines) has spent the last 4 odd years turnign his 1300cc engine into a 2100cc engine, on twin 48" carbs etc... Should be running around 135-140bph when setup. Porsche 5 stud wheels, disc brakes etc. Done it all himself. Hoping to get her out this year.

With regards to bugjam, its a bit commercial now, same as RTTS (Run To The Sun).
