Default calling all window boffins

Why cannot I create a diretory with the name sys

if I attempt to create it

mkdir sys

I get The system cannot find the file specified.

I discovered this trying to install visual studio and the installation fails attempting to create C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\VC\crt\src\sys

At first I thought it was protection or too many sub directories etc. but no it simply does not like a directory to be named sys

BTW XP Professional SP2 patched upto date

Googled and googled but cant find anything obvious

Umm, there should be no reason that it does not work. SYS is not a reserved word in windows. What i mean by that is you cannot call a folder LPT1 or COM1 etc.. because they are reserved. I tried what you have and its fine on my comp.

the only thing i can think of Tim possibly you already have a folder named sys maybe hidden from view try using the folder options to make all folders and files visible.

i have tried it on 3 machines now all xp in various guises and not one complains at all

A perplexing little problem their Tim are you the administrator on that machine ?

is there a possibility there is still something of the antivirus or even windows own firewall that is perhaps not allowing the creation of the folder.

and if you create it in safe mode will it not still be there when you start widows normally ?

I should check the permissions on the parent folder and make sure they arent restricted in anyway.

If you'de in XP pro you can turn off "use simple folder permissions" in folder options.

And there was me thinking from the subject that you had a problem with your double glazing.
