Can any of you IT types tell me why all of a sudden (in the last couple of days or so) I'm suddenly getting loads of -
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." - messages ?? Like most people I have always had the odd 1 or 2 from time to time, but now its like every other link I hit ![]() I've run my virus checker & that hasn't found anything untoward on my machine - so I don't know what else I can do

Sometimes things like eBay Toolbar/MSN Toolbar/Yahoo Toolbar etc. can be the problem. Try removing them.

Thats good advice from Peter, It might be spyware or some other form of Pox.
I had this on my laptop ages ago, but it was always one specific website. www.autotrader.co.uk, it was something to do with the macromedia flash adverts the site has. I cant remember how i fixed it but it was a b*stard to sort out. Supervox theres a couple of things you could try. You dont say what version of Windows you have installed on your PC. I'm guessing windows XP ? Right click "my computer" and choose manage of the menu it pops up. Left click event viewer, have a look in "system" for any event errors and codes. make a note of these in notepad or word. do the same with application. You shoudl find some more detail about why IE crashed. Copy and paste one of the results into google, then see what it comes back with, you find all sorts of useful stuff and one of the ideas will fix your problem. This also a good place to start http://support.microsoft.com/search/?adv=1 I think my problem was some kind of weird security issue with not being able to run activex scripts or something like that. You could try fiddling with the IE security settings, you'll find these by in IE, click tool, then internet options, then the security tab, click on internet and then see which options are disabled and then enable them one by one and see which one if any fixes your problem. I fixed my Laptop by doing some of these things, but I cant remember which one sorry. I did end up formating my laptop and reinstalling XP about 2 weeks after this though as it then started doing all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff. The only other thing I can suggest, is that if you have installed any new software recently to uninstall it and then try again and see if that makes any difference. Good luck ![]()

I have found that a good mix is:
XP SP2 Firewall (as jonboy said, its good and little CPU) SpyBot Search & Distroy (Install, Update, Imunize, go into the advanced options and it has a Hosts IP address block list that you can install) Lavasoft Ad-Ware (free version is good) Symantec Corporate Edition v10 Common Sense I have had my same XP install from before SP1 was released. I installed the system in 2002, so its possable to have an XP install going for years and trust me when i say that my usage on a computer is not basic at all.

I've used Sygate personal firewall for a few years now and it seems pretty good, free too.
