Default More Snorkelectomy

Hi there, I wanted to know if anyone has fitted the snorkel from the SV1000 to their SV650. On the pointy SV the snorkels on these two bikes will fit eachothers airboxes, without any modifications. The 650 snorkel is half the size of the 1000.

I ask becasue i've read about people simply removing the 650 snorkel, but it occurred to me that you would loose out on the ram effect created by the snorkel tube length.

I'm no expert on tuning intakes but i understand that the same ram effect talked about in tuned velocity stacks - tuning the ram effect into the cylinders, equally applies to tuning a ram effect into the airbox. I suspect this might only be relevant for injection engines, but would it not be desirebale to have a ram effect into the airbox that compliments the ram effect into the cylinders by maintaining a tuned length of tubing/snorkel on the airbox.

Thus has anybody tried and tested the larger sv1000 snorkel, allowing easier flow of air into the air box at high rpm, but maintaining tuned snorkel length for peak torque mid range (or wherever the snorkel length is tuned for)?

Following that I have also read about lifting the tank a bit to get more cold air into the intake. Has anybody found a cold air feed kit that uses the ducts at the sides of the SV S top fairing, to pipe fresh air under the tank, where the snorkel can pick it up?

All of the above wouldnt need any modifications to feuling and am sure the bike would run ok, but a powercomander would maximise the potential.

Beyond this would be to directly pipe air into the airbox and get a proper Ram Air intake that will pressurise the airbox, but would likely need fuelling mods with a powercommander. Has anybody tried this or seen any kits for this purpose?

Any advice anyone can offer on the effects of such mods, could you please let me know as i intend to try out mods of this type on my on pointy sv650s.

Ta, and love you lots. :P

play with air a fuel aint always a good idea

slap a k&N and a power camander and a full system.

most ppl have and it run just right K&N make it so much better i been told

Kate has an SV1000 snorkel on her 650. I intend to get one too!

Having ridden both, Kate's has a punchier throttle, and is much smoother generally. Hers has been remapped, and we both have hindle full systems.

Friend of mine has a Robin Hood kit car with a 1.8 Pinto in it running twin 40 Webers, he was finding it rubbish low down and had tiny trumpets on the carbs, a switch to longer ones improved it no end! Must be some wizardry with airflow I guess...

Just my 2p...

removing the air box top will add more power than just putting a larger snorkel on and k&n filters only just suck into the air box cutting down the amount of air the engine can intake resulting in less hp a bmc or dna filter being of solid construction will flow more air

There's quite a few posts in this thread that seem to be written in a foreign language

I'm intrigued by this stuff for the K3. If you're putting a different snorkel in, free-breathing filter... What does the fuel curve look like? If the intake mods are being effective, then you ought to be running pretty damn lean.

Similiarly, the Rene airkit loses the whole airbox and uses pods. If you do that on a carbed bike, you need to go up to massive jets, 190+. The bike just wouldn't go with standard jetting

So, who's done these mods and had a sniffer run done? What are y'all doing to your engines? I'm guessing most of you haven't had it remapped for it.

Thanks all for the responses. I think I'm going to try out a 1000 snorkel, pipe cold air under the tank and fit a K&N filter. But before I do this I think i will get a power commander to make the fuel mapping correct for it.

I will post the results after i've done them.

Removing the airbox top would remove what can be considered a restriction in getting air into the cylinders. However the air box acts like a plenum chamber, which will hold a charge of air ready to go into the next cylinder. I think a large chamber is good for torque low down, the larger the chamber the spread out the torque is. However ther is a limit because it works best in a tuned range, specific to the engine size and cam timing. And some very complex maths is involved. but too big and the effect is lost and no better than having no chamber at all.

Removing the top of the airbox means you dont have a plenum chamber at what you might find is that this is god for peak power high up the rev range at the detriment of power lower down. You might find the engine doesnt idle very well and stalls easier than before. Sounds a lot like the charecteristics of a highly tuned race engine, to me.

I think a Power Commander is about £270.00. You can buy them straight off their website. They sometimes come up on Ebay too. I saw one go for £175, a couple of weeks ago.
