Default miles on the engine

im just about to buy myself a sv650s,
now im fiinding them in the price range i want with between 10000 to up to 25000 miles.
obviously im gonna try n go for as lower milage as i can but ive found two roughly the same condition one being $2000 with 17000 miles n one at £2500 with 9000.

my question is, is the price difference relivant the the mileage or is there any engine stuff i shoud look out for with the higher milage bikes.

while the higher milage doesn't mean more problems, it migh be worth forking out the extra £500 for your peace of mind, my bike's done 30,000 miles, and its certainly not the highest seen on here (Rictus)

i'd buy the 9,000 miler

It depends on the age of the bike, etc.

If you are buying a high milage bike then you are more than likely going to need to add somepoarts to it, i.e. brake disks, pads, chain, sprokets, etc depending on the milage.

Saying that I baught my s3 with 18k on the clocks, replaced the rear disk, had to do all the pads, as well. But its been fine other than that.

I'd look for condition and service history including state of consumables, then try for a higher mileage bike at a knock down price "because of the mileage".
I know an SV with 70,000 miles running good as new.

my first curvy sv (which I smashed) was mint, with 12k miles, a blue flame, tinted screen etc etc but no alarm/immobiliser... cost me £2250

my new curvy had 26,000 miles on it (i think), and a scorpion can, data tool and data tag.

it needed a new rear tyre and a service at 30,000ish.

cost me £1300...

High mileage come on boys that's not high mileage, makes me laugh , these days everyone is fixated by the numbers

As a guild, my SV from new, rolling chassis, that’s discs bearings brakes, everything bar the engine done 154,000 (hard, trust me they were) miles in 2 years 4 months without any major issues, a regularly used bike will be in better nick that a bike sat around for a year with only a few thousand miles on it.

"Everything bar the engine" what does that mean? The engines wear out sooner, well no, not really.

Here’s how it goes.

My bike had four engines (how many , yes four) which sounds bad, but let me explain.

All a matter of time & money, it was about £300-400 for a good secondhand engine for the SV. A full gasket kit was £50-80, fixing a fault could cost the gasket kit plus whatever else was wrong, and you couldn't guarantee it would be working by Monday morning, on the other hand changing the engine took about an hour and that was it.

What it actually had was two engine problems, two engine problems happened on track days, I could have stopped and fix the fault, but decided to carry on and change out the lump after.

The other two were changed because a good deal came along, and the engines were getting on a bit (but still worked fine) one at 70,000 the other at 41,000 (changed for a 9,000 miler and a 5,400 miler respectively).

So rolling chassis, good for well over 100k if looked after, engines probably the same if you can be bothered to look after them, (I couldn't).

Low mileage, sounds good, but beware, sitting around doing nothing is the biggest killer of bikes around

Cheers Mark.

Not really, I covered the south of England and used it instead of a company car (got to claim for a 3.0 litre car for fuel though ).

Cheers Mark.

I was getting worried I might hit 8-9k this year which would put te bike up to 17k in 3 years. FFS do you ride in your sleep?
