1) cos all the crap that gets into the moving bits of your engine is floating in it (carbon, mostly, I think)

2) do you mean grades or types? a grade of oil is the quality and isn't really an issue in this country. Types are synthetic, part synthetic or mineral oils.
I won't given a definite answer on whether you should mix either, but I do mix any of the three with part synthetic if I have to.
To be honest, if I'm desperate I'll pub pretty much anything ni there.

I have had it on pretty good authority that if you put the cheapest suitable oil in and change it three times as often the engine will last longer than expensive oil changed less that costs three times as much.

Also don't get any of the used oil on your skin. It is full of carcenogens and other harmful things, and you can very easily get all sorts of nasty rashes from it.

Draining the oil while the engine is warm can make the draining slightly easier if you've left it a little late to change the oil.

Most oil change instructions say fit a new filter every other oil change.
I use Castol GP 10w-40 and change oil every 4000 miles but I fit a new filter every time believing that is best for the engine. Also I don't really rev my bike and accelerate hard. On a recent shim check it the engine was a clean as a whistle.
It a SV650s K2 with 29,800 miles on it and I have just realised I Have doubled the mileage since buying it 18 monthes ago.

Try revving it and accelerating hard, it makes it feel so much more worth it when you have to spend all this money on consumables.

Gearbox oil? It's both engine and gearbox oil. The oil's thick and black cos it's oxidised, just like the vegetable oil that gets too hot in your frying pan. there'll be a bit of soot in there but soot's more of a problem in diesel engine oils.

If you're talking about viscosity grade mixing then I would say there's not usually a problem providing you aren't thinning / thickening too much from the recommended grade.

Cheers Keith
