anyone know if you can replace a curvy 650 naked cdi with a 650s cdi of the same year i.e would the 650s one be setup any different to give more pep

Yes, but it's not a CDI.

If an SV650 has a flat tyre in the forest and no-one is there to blow it up, how long will it be 'til someone posts that the reg/rec is duff and the world will end unless a CBR unit is fitted? A little bit of knowledge = a dangerous thing.

An ignition unit/black box/ignitor/ etc etc.
CDI, as you probably know, means Capacitor Discharge Ignition, which is quite different from the conventional negative switched, (ie earth), transistorised coil and battery system that is most common on Jap bikes nowadays.

no i did not know the meaning of the cdi abbreviation i just assumed it was another of the many names used to describe the ignitor assembly
