Hi all,
Some advice required please. I have an '05 SV650S and I have had it for just over a year now. It has done about 2700 miles and I am loving it......all except one thing. I have a problem with the gears. I will try and explain as best as I can. I am cruising along at a speed, lets say 30 but it happens at other speeds too, when the lights ahead change to red. It's one of those split second decisions on wether to go or stop and I decide to stop. I make a fairly quick but not emergency stop, with the clutch in, and whilst doing so I remain in whatever gear I am in, say fourth, I don't drop through the gears as I am stopping. Once I have come to a stop I keep the clutch in so I should then be able to knock down through the gears and select either neutral or first, whichever I want. What actually happens is that I tap the gear lever and it moves freely. No gear change happens. No matter how many times I tap the lever. So I am now stuck in whatever gear I was in when I was criusing. The only way that I can then change gear is to stall the bike and then restart it. Even after this it sometimes does not want to change down the gears. Earlier today it did this and I had to push the bike to the side of the road and restart it a couple of times to get it to select the gear. What I want to know is what is causing this and how the hell do I fix it? So far I have checked the oil level and that is about it. I can't think of anything else to check and I am no mechanically minded person. Hopefully someone on here will be able to help me and/or come up with a really simple solution. All advice is gratefully recieved. Thanks, Cheese |

with all bikes if ur in too high of a gear coming to a stop it will get stuck in that high gear. just release ur clutch gently, not to stall just to almost engage and not quite, ull hear a lil click, that is the bike going back in gear, now continue to down shift (do this while stopped)
i hope this helps! cheers! |

many things are going on
first, with only 2700 miles, the transmission is not completely run in yet, as you get more miles it will operate smoother other things that affect shifting oil, over filled on oil will cause shifting problems, also dirty oil will cause shifting problems clutch adjustment... the clutch is adjusted under the sprocket cover, it's a screw & locknut adjustment, make sure the clutch is adjusted then adjust the clutch cable shift linkage.. must be clean and freely operating, the shifter & linkage is probably the most abused part of your bike, it doesn't get fingertip finesse, its manipulated with a booted foot, it's also close to the ground where it is subjected to road grime, wet roads are severe service on the shift linkage |

I have this on my new (520 miles) SV sometimes.
Anser is to let the clutch lever out a bit - for me its about 1/4" or so then it goes straight in. Had a go adjusting the clutch with Jambo last night which helped a bit, will get it looked at when I take it in for servicing on the 7th. Nothing to worry about really, just find the "work around point" and get it checked out some time soon David

Sequential gearboxes are like this a little, you get used to it and after a bit won't come to a stop unless you're in an appropriate gear, As said if you do end up at the lights in 5th, Just let the clutch out to biting point, back in again and you should be ok, you may have to do this a couple of times on the way down the box. Also you can try using your feet to ever so slightly rock the bike back and forth a few inches with the clutch in, this can help too.
In short it's about changing the load and position of the output and input side of the gearbox so everything lines up nicely ![]()

My K6 did exactly the same thing around that milage too. I'm now just shy of 4000miles & it seems to of stopped doing it.
The above answers work great! When the level moves freely, put pressure on it, left the clutch out until it clicks, pull the clutch back in. Sorted. If you get stuck in another gear whilst stationary, repeat the process. ![]() |

Cheese, this really is the simplest 'problem' to sort out - do the easy stuff as advised above (let the clutch out to find the biting point) .
This happens on my bike at 6500 miles so I would suggest that Baph has just learnt not to use too much engine breaking as he comes to a stop rather than his bike won't do it anymore. I'm sure RandyO is being very helpful, but I have been able to live with this problem just following that one piece of advice, |

Actually, I sometimes still get it when I'm going from neutral to first and the engine is cold. But she's due a service, so I'm guessing the oil change will help that.
Stu, I'd of thought engine braking would of helped, because then you're in the lower gears ready to set off, and not the higher gears you would be if just using the brakes & not changing down. I did have an issue with 'box gear changes' (more than one gear without letting the clutch out), but I followed advice on the .org, moved the gear lever position, and all is fine again. |

I always shift down the gears to 1st if I'm stopping so never had the problem
