Default Power commanders

I am new to the forum (today in fact) and new to bikes. At 33 I feel I have missed out a few years of some good fun I can tell you! I own a two year old SV650 and have heard in conversation that fitting a "Powercommander" is recommended. I found your forum and decided some of you guys will known as much if not more on the subject so advise please on fitting this "Powercommander" to my bike - indeed if I need one at all? Thanks everyone...

Welcome to the madhouse! Feel free to sit down, but don't feed the locals.

As for power commander, well, I haven't got one & don't think I'm missing anything. There are numerous tweaks I'd do to a 2yr old bike before even thinking about a power commander.

First thing would be Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) adjustment, double bubble if not already fitted, fender extender (you don't want a wet front plug), crash bungs, at least check suspension settings are good for you etc etc.

The SV is a machine with lots of torque to get used to if you're new to biking. I'd stick with what you have, but that's just me.

Those are good points and I think I will take your advice, thank you. I had my doubts about this thing anyway when there was chat about pulling wiring out of the poor bike! Think I will just keep my bike in original condition for a year or so before trading in for my dream Daytona 675. Mind you, I do love my SV so I will need to decide next year what to do. Maybe SV1000 perhaps? I have friends in Cornwall and would like to visit regularly but car far too thirsty and always stuck on motorways. Now an SV 1000 may just be the tonic

Basically a power commander enables you to mess around with the fuel maps (how much juice goes in the engine). It's useful if you want to change the shape of the torque curve or correct for changes in fueling most usually airflow mods (filter, can etc).

Personally, I think that a decent remap by someone wo knows what they are is all you need. Cost can be as little as £30. I got mine done after getting a racing exhaust system and it has smoothed out the torque curve considerably. It's now totally linear, all the way to the limiter.

If your bike is stock, then I don't see the point. Best idea is to let someone experienced ride it and make recommendations. If you are having low speed snatchyness, this can be due to other factors, most notably throttle cable play, TPS adjustment, and throttle body synchronisation.

PS. It's never too late to start biking.

Another Norfolk type. Hurrah!

I had considered getting a power commander, or just getting the bike remapped, but then I took the baffles out of my can and decided neither was necessary.

Oh, and don't get a 675 unless you're a contortionist

Thanks guys. I have looked at a new exhaust but not bothering with the power commander now. Any ideas on a good pipe?

Depends how much money you have / want to spend. The exhaust section is your friend, theres loads of information in there, you'll find it here

Personally I'd be looking at a Remus if you have money to burn or if you dont a Carbon Can Company exhaust if you dont.
