I was thinking switches as I've had problems with both the clutch and starter switch. (Have replaced the starter waiting on eBay for the clutch).
I don't think it was the battery as it took quite a beating before we got it to start, and hovi5 said that he has checked the charging system using a multi-meater and the numbers he gave sound about right. The sympoms are: The starter spins but does not catch the engine, or the engine starts to catch but it doesn't seam to want to take. Was thinking it could be the switches as if the the curcit is not fully bridged it could drop the current at the vital time. Also a couple of times we tried to start it and didn't get any response from the bike. His bike is also the same age as mine and knowing electrics are not an SV strong point and what I've had to replace on mine it could be similar. However your thoughts are apprecated... |

Surely if it was switches it would either start or it wouldnt ?
If the starter is spinning but the engine doesnt fire. Then wouldnt it make sense to check the ignition circuit to make sure the spark is good ? What about basic stuff like cr*p / water in the fuel ?

So it is turning over, just not firing right???
This can only be two things … fuel or sparks!!! Sparks is easy to check … whip the front lead off and either remove the front plug or if you have a spare use that. Rest/press it against the engine block (preferably not a painted bit), or somewhere where it will be ‘earthed’ e.g. a engine mount bolt/rocker bolt. If you have a fat blue spark it isn’t going to be lack of spark!! (only other thing is it might be firing at the wrong time, but that is less likely). If you have a yellow spark or none at all then there is a problem. If the spark checks out then it is fuel … whip the carbs off and take a look in the float bowl, clean out the test and try again. |

to get at the rear plug, undo the two bolts at the front of the tank by the yoke. It'll lift up away from the front of the bike, under the pillion seat is a metal rod, use that to prop the tank up. Undo the airbox and take it off and you'll see the rear plug / HT lead. The front plug is a bit more tricky, but its not difficult, there is a knack to it though. If you undo the two bolts that hold the radiator on and also undo the fairings and pop them off the lugs on the rad, you can pull the rad forward so that access is a bit easier. Slide your hand up and pop the HT lead off and then you can get at the plug. Best thing to do is to use the special tool in the Suzuki tool kit to undo the plugs. When you put the HT leads back on make sure that the rubber grommet is pushed back into the grove in the cylinder head. Otherwise in the rain the water will get into the front plug. You'll now when you have got the grommet seated properly. HTH
