Hi there, just a bit concerned, and was wondering if anyone could offer advice. I commute up to vauxhall bridge every day, and on thursday i managed to get flashed by a gatso on the way home on the a3212 (the embankment). I've done a quick search but not turned up too much. I pass this camera every day so I'm very aware of its presence, so naturally i had slowed down - I am sure i was doing an indicated 27mph in 2nd gear (a 30 limit road). I haven't received a NIP yet, but its only been two days. What's the likelihood i will receive one? And how do i appeal or contest it? I'm worried about going to court. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm only allowed 6 points - and I'm near the end of my 2 years so i would be gutted if i had to start afresh now. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I've already had a quick look through there. I'll have a closer look tonight. They seem to suggest I take this to court if I do get a NIP. Is there no way to avoid this?

It's not as bad as it seems yet. I got flashed about 5 times last year and none of them came to anything, on nearly all those occasions I was deffo below the limit. I think they flash occasionally to test themselves maybe.

If it has flashed with film in and you get a NIP then you should only be looking at 3 points for this plus I think £60 fine. I think you have the choice of taking that or going to court and either clearing it or probably getting same points but bigger fine and costs if you lose. Its your choice to possibly risk more points [magistrates awarded van man who took me out, 4 for his driving without due care rather than a normal 3] and more costs against winning. If you intend to fight it, seek expert help asap about your chances.
The two year thing is from the date of your FIRST licence. So if someone took a test at 17 in a car and a bike test at 21 then then the two years runs from the car test date. If this is your first test full stop then you wont in all probability be losing your licence unless you get a further 3 points so bear that in mind when riding. Once youre past your 2 year deadline from first test then youll be ok other than the insurance may hammer you if you get any more. Alternatively, emigrate. Worked for me [though I did send letters to the met from Amsterdam and Canberra to prove it] ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Was it a forward facing camera?? If so don't worry unless you have a no plate on the front of your bike!!

If you are sure of the speed you were doing, it might have been triggered by a vehicle going in the opposite direction.

If you are sure you where doing 27 then don't worry you will get nothing through as it will calculate your speed and write it off automatically.
There is a 10% limit also to allow for calibration error on your speedo. Not all cameras have films in, if they flash it does not mean you will get a NIP, they may just want you to poop your pants for 2 weeks, if you have not heard anything within 2 weeks you should be OK. Sit and wait for postie, he may never come I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have been throught many and never had a thing through the post ![]() ![]()

Thanks a lot for all your input! It was the standard rear facing big yellow gatso. im only 18 and did my bike test before my car test so definitely still only allowed 6 points. I like to think I'm a fairly responsible rider for an 18 year old (compared to some of my mates anyway!), so I'd just really be gutted if the NIP did come through. I really do value my licence - i ride every day to both work an college. I hope what most of you have said is true, but it was dual carriageway bit and I was the only vehicle on the road. I guess thats why I'm worried. I cant have been speeding - not with the 10% limit and the indicated speed of 27. Oh well, i guess time will tell!

Don't worry about it until you know if it's going to come to anything... Too early yet to be fretting IMO.
