as most of you know my k3 is dead
![]() yesterday morning before this happened i was one of those riders that always said "its wont happen to me i'm a carefull rider" so whilst travelling down the road at 5.45am with virtually no traffic on the road i get pulled infront of at a junction, nothing i could have done and from my point of view nothing anyone could have done, it was just one of those things which could have been very bad indeed! I'd still like to know how hard i actually hit the van? this is the first bad accident Ive been in and for those of you that haven't been off yet YOU DO NT WANT TO GO THERE! KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED AND EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED! ride safe friends. kwak zzr (Darren) |

After my crash this summer, I can say the same. Not fun. At least for me it was a bike that I didn't really care about. I cared about my collar bone though...

That's bad, sorry to hear about this, hope you're OK.
I nearly got taken out by a BMW X5 (it would be wouldn't it) coming in the opposite direction and deciding to turn right just in front of me with no indicators/no warning. Did an emergency stop as he stopped half way through his manoeuvre, managed to avoid him, was so angry I nearly stopped and lumped him one. Just goes to show you have to be ready for anything. Hope you get well and back on the bike soon. |

The SV weighs what? 168kg dry. More with fuel. Lets also assume you're a 12 stone biker (not including bike gear in any of the following calculations) Depends how you think about the crash really. Before you stopped, Kinetic Energy: K(e) = (mv^2)/2.... K(e) = [(246)(30^2)]/2... K(e) = 110700 ft lbs. That works out at a little over 150 kilojoules. Thats around half the energy required to 'split' sodium atoms (just FYI) and enough energy to lift your (12 stone) body approx 190m in the air! Naturally, if you weigh more, or take into account fuel, the energy goes up. If you braked JUST before hitting the van, the enregy value goes down because you were going slower. If you were going faster than 30mph when you hit the van, the energy exerted will be much higher than this. Your bike, and you, took probably 3/4 the energy from the impact, the van will of taken some, but probably not much if you hit it side on. Want to think of it in terms of Gforce? Gforce is basically a measure of how quickly you stop, so relies on the speed at the time of impact, and the distance travelled to achieve the change in speed. Most accidents decellerate (note, this isn't that the incident is complete, this is just to go from moving, to not moving) in less than 100 milliseconds. At 30mph, you travel 4.4ft every 100 milliseconds. But you weren't travelling, you were decelerating. So, G=(v^2)/30*d... lets assume it took a whole half a foot to go from 30mph, to zero. It was probably less than this for the bike, but no doubt you will of come off the bike & continued to slow down until you (unfortunately) hit the van itself - I imagine. Half a foot is 6 inches... G=(30^2)/30*0.5... That's 60 G's. ![]() You want that in laymans terms? A skydiver, under a normal dive (not high speed dive), opens his parachute, that's 49G. In the US, if a crash test makes a dummys chest suffer 60G's for more than 3 milliseconds, the vehicle fails it's road safety testing (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 20 ![]() You were lucky mate. Very lucky. Now, did you really want to know? |

Glad you are okay matey. Yep, I had the same thing once, was doing about 45 in a 50 when a car just pulled out. Police said I didn't even have a chance to brake and hit the front wheel of his Omega. Woke up in hospital with a broken nose and some minor head injuries, I was very lucky. While I was not at fault in that accident I used to ride like a loon all the time, that certainly changed my way of thinking. Hope you get it all sorted out. Be safe peeps.

(I almost got totalled the other day, dude pulled through a junction, breaking a red light, swung across the road into my lane, chatting on the phone. And then screeched to a massive halt when he saw me. I was already past him at that point. Tosser. Bikes can be dangerous. ![]() |
