Default Motorway flashing amber signs

Can someone please clarify something for me? On my commute to work I always see the flashing amber signs above either saying 40 or 60.

I have looked in the Highway Code and it says it is a temporary maximum speed limit - but is this obligatory? I've been told that it is only an 'advisory' sign and not mandatory.

I'm a little bit confused and I don't want to be pulled for 'ignorance'.........

cheers......

AFAIK, if it ain't got a red circle around it...

Anyway, just use your common, as I'm sure we all do.

on some motorways these signs are hooked up to the speed cameras. When they drop to 50 - so do the cameras! So they must be mandatory- which sucks.

No this is wrong fortunately, the amber ones usually in the middle central reservation are used to advise of problems up ahead, sometimes they say fog, some times they give a speed. I think they are advisory and not enforceable but I could be wrong anyway most of the time they forget to turn them off so people just ignore them anyway. How many times have you passed one and seen it say 'fog' and never see any, not even a hint of it.

The ones hooked up to cameras for example are the ones on the gantries above the M25, these DO have red circles around them, they definitely are enforceable and they are hooked up to the gatsos in every lane behind them.

I think there are other ones similar to the ones above the M25 but I don't know where, as far as I am aware I have *NEVER* heard of the amber ones be hooked up to gatsos, though nailing it past them and then getting caught the policeman/woman will probably rib you about it.

They often have these on the M40, saying 40 and even 30 sometimes when there are no queues and the traffic is doign a steady 80-90! Glad they are not compulsary, cos they are not closely enough watched and changed to be a real use.
