Replacing Regulator/Rectifier

Hi all,

If the above needs to be replaced, should I also get the battery replaced too? Even if the regulator is under, rather than overcharging, would it ruin the condition of the battery? It's a gel battery and only 2 months old.

Since the reg/rect is under charging, and the battery is only 2 months old, I'd say no.

Of course, if I'm wrong, you could just buy the reg/rect & if you have problems with the battery holding charge once it's given, then you could buy a new battery at that point.

Cheers Baph- the dealer's doing the Reg/Rec under warranty (finally), but has said he won't change the battery- the mechanic on Sunday who spotted the fault said it should be changed, my Bro also has had to replace the battery with every reg/rec he's had replaced.

The battery is still in warranty too, so I guess it can be replaced later if it's ruined. I'm just getting a bit sick of speaking to the dealer to be honest... He's barely helpful.

Regardless of the battery being under warranty etc, if you can show that a fouled part (which has been replaced under warranty) has also caused the need to replace another part, I'd be arguing with the dealer some more.

However, that would be more just arguing for the fun of it in my case.

Shame to hear yet another dealership that doesn't like warranty claims. So much for customer service.

Yeah right- their website claims they pride themselves on after sales service.

I've been onto them a few times about the battery dying, but when they tested it with their voltmeter a few weeks ago, the readings showed no problems.

Also, the tyre pressures that caused my off- he wouldn't accept that a bike had left the forecourt with badly set up pressures (sadly, it was a few weeks after buying the bike and though I had a mechanic's words on the tyre pressures- ie back way up, front way down), I had no direct evidence to argue with, so was a bit Heather Mills'ed.

I'm hoping this will solve my cylinder cutting out- the front cylinder head looks clean (fenda extenda helps this), though there was an occasional knocking noise from it last night- though I'm hoping this is just the engine behaving badly with bad voltage running through it...

I may just take the bike to an independant mechanic and get it checked over- even just for peace of mind that I haven't got a real duffer!!

The battery might well be absolutely fine... If you have any problems with the new reg/rec then they should replace it, but there's no reason to assume it'll have been affected. I've been riding around with a broken reg/rec for a fortnight Letting the battery run completely flat isn't a good idea as it can be bad for it, but not always, this one's been flatlined a dozen times and still works a charm, as was my first one, it lasted 5 years. The one I had inbetween was a cheapy (don't know if that had anything to do with it or if it was just coincidence) and was knackered after I flattened it twice.

Cheers- the battery hasn't completely flatlined- just below enough juice to start the bike. Personally, I have no reason to think it's a problem- the Optimate I'm using doesn't indicate poor condition when I plug it in so I'm guessing that it's OK.
