Default Going Wireless NOW FREE! & Ubuntu

Thought I'd ask the good peeps of IT650.org
I got the Martin's tips email today (very good hope you all get it too)
Anyway they suggested wireless was now less than £35 from this.
My question is - would this let me connect to the web on my Desktop via usb (as it's not wireless) while at the same time connecting wirelessly on my 2 laptops and PSP?
Or is their any other cheaper way using the 2 modems I already have.

Next question will be how do I search for wireless connection on a UBUNTU laptop?
Many thanks

Should do. Works for me.

Em... should just pop up in System / Admin / Networking as Wireless connection1 or something.
If it doesnt then you figure out what card you have and muck about a bit.
Luckily for my new toshiba / centrino laptop there were no problems, just picked up up and worked. (You have to click 'activate connection' as usual though...same as you did for your normal ethernet connection or whatever.

terms & conditions:

"FON will publish your location on the FON maps that highlight the FON Community’s Access Points"

basically if you're going for one of these, you have to agree that your broadband will be used by other people within the community, and it will have zero security so anyone who is a member of the FON community can connect through your bandwidth.

I'm just saying this for people that don't read the terms & conditions, I can see its advantages.. i.e it costs sweet fa!

but I personally wouldn't like my details posted on a website saying free access point at this guys house... all broadband has a fair use policy so you could be cut off if other people steal your bandwidth.

still worth ordering then flogging on fleabay, hehe :P

Thanks for that -
Actually it splits your bandwith - by a % you choose.
Part completely secure for you, and part that you share only with other fon users that have an access password. (while sitting on the pavement outside your house )

And no you promise not to flog on ebay

Sorry Stu, but

Secure? Yea, ok.

Yes, granted it offers 2 SSIDs, one global FON community one, and one VLAN setting just for whoever you want to use it. It's effectively a stripped down Linksys router, but probably not using Linksys firmware.

Still, I've ordered one. Once I get it, I'll just change the address to one a few doors away
