normal 10/40 engine oil on your chain
i noticed yesterday when my bike was on the paddock stand that the rear wheel didnt turn as freely as id like so i give the chain a good lube with normal 10/40 engine oil, this seemed to lube the chain better than any chain lube ive tryed sofar but as you can well imagine the mess after the bike has been ridden so now the wheel is running nice and free and all the 10/40 excess has been flung about the place i've now re lubed with pj1, seems to have done the trick and the chain looks nice and clean aswell
theres no harm in this is there other than the mess? |

Go on, admit it. You just wanted to get it dirty to give you an excuse to clean it again, didn't you?
Seriously though, engine oil should be OK. I've used it on pushbike chains for years, and it's been through my Scottoiler on the SV with no ill effects. |

Re: normal 10/40 engine oil on your chain
I use slightly thicker engine oil than that in my loobman all the time. I hasten to add that it's always mineral stuff. Good ol' organic type. Bought a 10l tub when I got the bike, not even ¼ way through it yet.
I also have some dry lube too that I use now & again. |

Engine oil is what you are supposed to lube the chain with (read your handbook )
... I am mega tight, so use USED engine oil ... doing this is kinda recycling too isn't it?!?!! |

Ive always used old engine oil on the chain. It's free and saves getting rid of it elsewhere, and works very well.I put it on with an old paintbrush so it does'nt fling too much off,and I get good chain life.

just by the spin of the wheel on the stand shows it lube's the best.
