Default New one in the face of MicroSoft

At last, major companies are starting to realise what the rest of the industry knows.

Oracle has recently annouced that it's data integrity check system will in future, only work under non-win32 operating systems.

If you want a commercial DB, and money is no object, you go Oracle. All our clients use it (even though we support any DB system they want). This news means that MS are effectively ruled out of all BIG business server operations.

Nope, 64bit Windows are out of the, erm, window

Oracle, like Apple, don't want anything to do with MicroSoft by the looks.

NOTE: The rest of their software will run fine, you just won't be able to integrity check or fix (this includes rebuilding indexes!!!).

You'd be a fool to run a large DB (and I'm talking 40Gb plus, our busiest DB's can have more than 600,000,000 transactions per table per day!!!) without integrity checking.

Rumour has it, archiving will be the next to drop Windows support.

Nice. Reminds me of a line at the start of Jeff Wayne's musical adaptaion of War Of The Worlds: "Slowly but surely, they drew their plans agains them..." (If you haven't listened to WotW then you need to).

I thought you said large? Sorry yes, Oracle is quite sufficient for small databases.

That's true, I work for one of the big investment banks and they don't use Oracle afaik - it's Sybase or DB2.

I was under the impression this new data integrity stuff wasn't the basic integrity checks and rebuilds that oracle performs purely in software, but a new end to end integrity check starting at the client and going all the way down to the physical disk (via server, table handlers, san, etc)
So yes, this is a blow to MS, but it won't mean that an oracle system is unrunnable on MS, it simply means that the absolute pinnacle of data integrity won't be achievable.

It should be pointed out, however, none of this stuff exists yet. The working groups are only just being formed.
