Yup, when I was working in Sumatra, we had one next door to the "coffee house" we used. Many a night we would plan to sneak in and cut their wires. But, the reality check that stopped us was the thought of what they might just cut of ours.

Bloody disturbing when you are nursing a self inflicted injury and just need peace and quite and they start wailing at noise levels that would be banned on most racetracks.

I suppose the counter argument would be the noise from church bells. Why should muslims and drunks be forced to listen to them.

It's the call to prayer. Basically, 5 times a day Muslims are supposed to face Mecca and pray. In order to synchronise all the mosques in muslim countries and areas broadcast the call.
