Default ASBOs for bikers ?

ASBOs for bikers
By Steve Farrell

Police are threatening to issue ASBOs to motorcyclists as part of summer clampdowns on dangerous riding.

Antisocial Behaviour Orders will issued to riders for riding too close to other vehicles or “causing annoyance,” Strathclyde Police has said. Riders caught repeating the behaviour within 12 months will have their motorcycles confiscated, according to the force.

Chief Inspector Jim Igoe, of Strathclyde Police’s Road Policing Department, said:
“There is no excuse for those who ride carelessly or exceed the speed limit and who cause nuisance and annoyance to other people. Under Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) legislation those caught speeding or distressing members of the public will face a formal written warning, which is recorded for 12 months. Should the driver commit a similar offence within the 12 month period their bike will be confiscated and they will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Riders with loud pipes will also be targeted, according to the force.
Because ASBOs are civil orders, police do not have to establish the same level of proof as they would to secure a criminal conviction.

See next week’s MCN to find which other forces will be dishing out ASBOs this summer and for details of enforcement operations targeting motorcyclists across the country.

Apply the same to cars as well then. I frequently get cars sitting too close to me.

Oh wait, we have the Dangerous Driving charge for that.

Oh, and that's taken from MCN....

Can I nominate the driver of the red car I saw picking his nose and eating the fallout.

It was dangerous as he had to take his hand off the wheel to mine it out, and I found it annoying.

its so antisocial to sit in the outside lane when the other 2 are clear. maybe it could be applied to that! or even to lorries overtaking each other

I was following some knob on a scooter, this tit is following a car inches away to be honest, this is the main reason why. If i have got too close to the back of a car i either slow down, or if someone is too close behind me i move to the righthandside of the road, incase they brake i will go round the side(obviously i would slow down eventually )

i know MCN isn't generally the most reliable source, but I do know of someone who had their bike confiscated in London last year in this way - got caught one too many times pulling wheelies

don't know of any other instances though, so it can't be that common. I reckon you'd have to be stunting, doing burnouts outside someones house, etc before they'd bother ASBOing you

Despite how much poo MCN is full of, there's one element of that statement which has some substance, the bit about loud cans. A mate of my brothers who rides a CBR6 has a Quill can fitted, and recently was presented with a £30 fine for the loudness. His can's not particularly loud either, so seems they are clamping down a bit.

That just leaves the option to ride with a loud can with the rider, personally I love the sound of my system and can, and won't be changing it even if it may cause me to get fined.

As for the riding too close, I don't do it so aint fussed. Riding too close is stoopid IMO, so if people get blasted for it tough.

Loud cans issue:

Surely they can accept that a loud can MIGHT make drivers more aware of our presence? Granted if it breaks the rules for noise level, but that's a quantifyable infringment, and already covered under different legislation. That's a bit like horns!

I wonder what their plans are about the kids in Llandudno who frequent the car park by McDonalds doing burn-outs every week. Nothing? Oh, business as usual then eh?

I rekon it would be virtually impossible to police. Think of the excuses you can come up with for being too close to someone. It's endless! You'de have to be sitting on someones bumper on the motorway for ages at speed to get a valid recording. Who's gonna do that?

with the loud cans issue i go by the rule of "don't drive like a t*at". if i go past police i;ll keep the revs low, if i'm in an area likely to have police in i won't blast around. simple as
