Re-Mounting Back Wheel

Noticed when I took it off there was a fair amount of clear lube on the axle bolt.

Still reasonably lubed when re-installed. Should you always give the bolt a quick spray with lube when you put the wheels back on?

when i remove and replace i use grease.

Just got my puncture repaired.

So reckon I should probably put some grease in before I go back out on it.

My '05 appeared bone dry on both axles at the first tire change. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the axles don't actually contact anything inside the wheel hub??

I thought all bearings were on the outside portion of the hubs. Why grease the axle?

Makes it easier to get in and get out. You are right though. Nothing spins on it.

I usually wipe the surplus around with a 'clean' finger and smear the excess over the bearing. Inevitably the centrifugal forces of the wheel will spin some off again so you can then put it back on - and round and round we go !

Yeah, the hub and axle don't actually contact. It does make the sliding fit with the bearings easier. Also once running at temp, there will be a small amount of fling (If it actually gets hot enough?), some of this will possibly land on the bearings, kind of like a splash lube effect similar to some gear/ transfer boxes.

When you look at the parts called out on the service manual, it's not only the wheel & sprocket bearings which are identified for lube, also the area between the dust covers and the gap between the axle and the sprocket bearing.

As it's the first time I've had the wheel off i was wondering if people always lube the bearings, every time the whell is off.

I get a little paranoid over stuff like this

Not trying to pick bones here or anything...

If you tighten the axle down and install a cotter pin, what makes you think it will spin and splash grease around?
