Although I haven't seen the ship for some time, I was very sorry to see the ship on fire on the news this morning. As a boy, I vividly remember looking into that huge dry dock and then up at those huge masts when my grandad used to take me to Greenwich for the afternoon. And then one day we went on it. It was a bit boring at age 8, I didn't understand the intricacies of marine architecture (he did, he used to design power systems for warships), and I was more interested in my ice cream. But I could still see what a fantastic vessel she was.
Going up in flames - what a sad fate for such a beautiful ship. |

It was undergoing a 25 million quid rebuild and half the ship timbers were already removed so at least that's saved, they'll patch it up, it's just a 50 million quid refit now

Ah, but 50% of the ship was away being restored (Masts, top decking, most of the innards etc), and the 50% left is salvegable. It was mainly the Hull that took the brunt of the fire damage and according to the BBC, there is very slim chance that its savable. I suppose the insurance will pick up the bill.
Sad story though, but Creek road in deptford was empty this morning, leading to a speedy run to work ![]() |

RIP Cutty Sark.
An icon of it's age.

Was really sad to hear about this today - not only is it a loss of a real landmark/piece of history but it's quite important to greenwich and the businesses there as well.

The ship really is beautiful. Shame that Greenwich Council then built a block of council flats next to it

I'm keeping my fingers crossed they can fix this. I guess you have to ask at what point is so much replaced that it's no longer the original ship? plus how much to repair?
Tell you what though, given the £400 Billion or whatever the bloody olympics are up to now, it'd be a shame not to see it repaired even if the cost was high ![]() Clicky: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6675381.stm
