Default Long weekend location

End of June is the wife's Birthday, first week of July is the wedding anniversary, and I know she'd like to visit he Scottish Islands.

So, how easy is it to get to somewhere like Isle of Arran or Kintyre for a long weekend ? We live minutes from Heathrow, but I guess the smaller regionals don't fly out of there... The other option is somewhere on the mainland..

We are very "easy" hikers, we like the idea of walking on our green & pleasant land, but not if it's too much hard work That's what you get being brought up in London...

Any ideas people ??

Woohoo! That'll be the Superbikes weekend at Knockhill then . Stay over in Edinburgh or possibly here http://www.dakotaforthbridge.co.uk/ and do the racing. You can do the "East Neuk of Fife" for a day out and if you really must "hike" try wandering around Edinburgh with all its hills & stairs. There are pubs to keep you going You could of course do something a bit more "real" hiking by walking up Arthurs Seat just down from the new Scottish Parliament buildings.

Sounds good to me!

Listen, you'll get me into a lot of trouble you will...

A few years ago I took her to Barcalona, only to fond out that Harley Davidson were having a Centenary get together. 4 days in a fantastic city which was full of Harley types riding around all over the place. She was not amused

Sounds like the missus is not a motorbike fan

Why not catch a flight to Glasgow, hire a car and drive to Oban where it is a lovely place to stay and it is the gateway to the Isles.

Be careful though the road to Oban is breathtaking and is commonly used by Ecosse riders

Just take her to Gretna and make an honest woman of her at last

You can fly to Inverness from Bristol, can you do that from Stansted or Luton maybe (Easyjet). Then its a short car trip to some lovely west coast locations and Loch Ness etc.

Heathrow is on my doorstep, I'd rather not travel to another airport, we only have a limited amount of time and I'd rather not use it traveling.

Well if it's Arran you want then Heathrow to Glasgow it is, thence train/hire car to ferry at Ardrossan (24 miles) and you're there. Jump up Goat Fell (2867 feet of easy path followed by stunning views) and back down to the pub/candlelit restaurant.

Kintyre is a bit further and the train/ferry bit turns into...bus. Is Mrs Jelster a bus person? Perhaps not.

Scotland gets properly gorgeous about 20 minutes from Glasgow Airport (so long as you don't head east) so you really can't go wrong.
