Default What's that smell?

Riding back from work tonight, came to a stop at a level crossing & thought "What is that smell?", took a casual look behind me as I started off & saw some smoke. Me being the der brain thought it was the driver behind me having a smoke . Stopped at Morrisons at Crewe to pick up some milk, came out & the bike was completely dead and the smell was back. Luckily I only live about 300mtrs from there so pushed it home.
Took the seat off and was met by the same smell. Took the rear bodywork after I had eaten my tea and touched the rectifier it was red hot (Good thing I have won one on ebay). Trouble is the bloke had only posted it today (after 2 weeks of waiting), so looks like I will be off the road for a while.
Many thanks to Tris & Leo Lady the new reg/rect is from a gixxer 750 and you hit the nail on the head

At the risk of

I've had a "What's that smell?" moment with mine too. In my case it was a partially seized rear brake. (Still not completely sorted)

Looks as if you've answered it yourself????

Your rectifier has fried itself.

Mine did the same last year about five miles from reaching Knockhill. Smoke billowing out the tail unit while riding thru Callander . It was a scorching hot day then too. Same for you?

If the bike is your only mode of transport, then you can still ride the bike ... as long as you don't need to go too far or travel at night ...

If you have fried the old one you will need a new battery anyway. Pop it on charge overnight (have you got an optimate??) to make sure it is fully charged.

Disconnect/unplug the re-rec unit. Pop the mains charger in ya rucksack ...

Fit the battery and start her up and ride off ... obviously keep the lights off and battery usage to a minimum (no point sitting at a set of red lights with the indicators and brake lights going ).

When you get to work, whip the battery out and bang it back on charge again ... rinse and repeat

If it is a injected bike I'd be less inclined to try this unless your commute is <5 miles, but on a carby, once it is going it will last a fair while running 'total loss' on a fully charged and healthy battery (yours will be brand new ).

I have done this to tide me over on both bikes and cars, it's all good!!

Luckily I have got the car to get to work in, so the poor old girl is sat in the back yard with the cover over her
It was chucking it down with rain when mine went. I've come to the conclusion that the SV saw the weather forecast & thought sod that
