Mot

My bike is due its first MOT this week and I have had conflicting reports about the legality of my exhaust, it’s a viper can stamped with not for road use but it has a baffle fitted that has the kite mark. Is this enough to get it through the MOT or am I going to have to find a new legal exhaust (the original didn’t come with the bike).

Try and ask around for a "friendly" MOT station.

I've got a non standard can on and had no difficulty in getting a MOT. He was recommended by my local bike spares dealer.

I'm pretty sure if it has "not for road use" stamped on it it shouldn't pass an MOT. Some places are more relaxed about it, or swap it temporarily with a legal one.

the shop I am booking it in at sold me the baffle (and I tend to get all my gear from there) so I am hoping that they are a more relaxed, I don’t have access to a road legal one so I will just have to keep my fingers crossed and see what happens.

"Not for Road Use" or "For race use only" is a failure, even if it's baffled.

Polish it off, or put a sticker over it.

Gnome, what kind of sticker would be appropriate?? also how long do you reckon it would take to polish out? I have various grades of sandpaper, some wet and dry,a tube of autosol and about 4 days

That depends on the depth of the original stamp - Re: polishing it out.

A plain white sticker should be fine. From what I remember, an MOT tester can inspect and test the bike, but cannot "tamper" with it in any way.

I once passed an MOT with no sidelights, by putting a black bit of tape over the sidelight "marking" on the switchgear.

To be honest though, you'd be best asking your local MOT man, as it's not uncommon for their opinions to differ.

Just checked, its stamped "COMPETITION USE ONLY", I dont suppose that makes any difference?

3. A silencer fitted to a motorcycle first used on or after 1 January 1985 which is not marked with either:

a. the make and type specified by the motorcycle manufacturer (See info column).

Seeing as you have an injected 1, come to brum and pick up the can that I have in my garden before I bin it..... its in FOR SALE section.... "yours for £15.00"
