Default Looking for lists of wheelie tips...

Hi im new to the site, I know you all want to know what bike anyone has, so I will start with that:

56 plate Metalic "Teal"? (read Turquoise bue) pointy SV650s.

Loving the bike especially as my last bike was a road legal 200cc Chinese import trials bike, I only did 400 miles on it though as it was so fraustrating.

I had a little fun popping wheelies on it, but it didnt have the grunt to manage power wheelies , just cluch ones...

Im looking to safely learn wheelies on my SV.
I have read that to do a basic power wheelie you get rolling slowy (around 10 - 20 mph) and then roll off the throlle and then whack it open, I tried this and have managed a couple of smallish (maybe 40 degree) wheelies, but I didnt really cary them far.

Could people please post links to any guidelines on the various methods of pulling wheelies on the SV.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Joe

Sorry but you have contradicted yourself. There is no such thing as a safe wheelie.

ahhh the politics of the bulitin board...

Ok for the pedantic, I am aware of the risks involved and willing to assess them before attempting anything, however you can listen to those with experience and learn or you can jump blind.

Still looking for a useful reply...
There must be some decent and helpful people on this board...

May i suggest that this is not the best way to start life on the .org.
The peeps here are only too willing to help with bike related issues etc but we all want people to be safe and to repect others on the road so wheelies are not top of the advice genda.

Ok, if you ARE desperate to do wheelies (And remember, they hurt even more than normal riding when you fall off coz you feel more of a t1t...)

Cover the rear brake at all times. If it starts to go wrong, a dab on the rear brake will bring it down. Possibly quite quickly and with a tank-slapper, but you're less likely to hurt yourself than by flipping the bike. Also, take your hand away from the front brake. Your wheel will be in the air and spinning, this helps your balance. If you grab a handful of front it will de-stabilise you and when you come down you will get a tankslapper.

You can use the technique you mentioned, and it will bring the front up. What you have to ask yourself is how controlled does that feel? I've used that technique and find it very difficult to judge what you're doing.

Better, in my mind, to set a 'positive grip' on the throttle (IE so your hand is further round on the throttle than usual when at rest) and note the position your hand is in (I use a seam on my glove to mark against the kill switch) rapidly accelerate to about 4k revs, then quickly bring the throttle round to the stop.

This gives you a roughly measureable height for your wheelie. Move your hand further round for higher, or less far round for lower.

Please note, as BigApe says, there is no such thing as a 'safe' wheelie. If you do stunts, you WILL drop your bike at some point. You may hurt yourself, or others. You will, if doing this on the public road, be breaking the law and could get actual time inside an actual jail, with actual convicts deciding they like the look of your rear end in the showers.

So my next piece of advice is don't go into the greenhouse (for those who've seen the film Scum...)

I'm offering this advice because it sounds like you're gonna try to do them whether we give you the advice or not, adn I think it's better to have as much info as possible before you try to do something stupid (which this is).

The safest way you can learn to wheelie is to book yourself into a wheelie school, it'll cost you £150 and there will be a bloke there to assess your technique and give you useful advice, and you'll be doing it on an empty runway. Even then, you have to sign an insurance waiver form that says you accept the risks involved, which may include death or permanent disability.

The consequences are really serious, so just give it some thought, OK?

Bear and Warthog thanks for the help,
I was wondering how much wheelie school costs, can anyone recommend a good one in Essex, preferably near Southend on Sea?

Cheers
