Hi folks
I part-exed a bike on the 20th June to a dealer and I got a letter on friday telling me to 'pay a fine or a bigger fine or they'll take me to court' because it hadn't been taxed since 1st July which has got me panicking somewhat. I rang up the shop I sold it to and they have sent all the paperwork to DVLA saying that I have sold it to them and told me that DVLA are fully aware that they have got the bike because they have to give them a list of bikes they have in stock, so why are they doing this to me? Do their databases not communicate with each other or are they just idiots? I've written back to them saying I sold it on that date (it was taked when I sold it and it's ran out since) and have sent a copy of the receipt from the shop. Will this be OK? I've got enough stress at the moment without all this ![]() Cheers for any advice Amanda |

How to notify DVLA if you sell your vehicle
![]() You must notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) of the exact date of sale or transfer of your vehicle using the registration document or certificate. You and the buyer should follow the procedures correctly or you will remain liable for the vehicle until DVLA records have been updated. What you and the buyer need to do You should notify DVLA using the appropriate section of the registration document or certificate. The section you use will depend on the type of document you hold. You should also keep a separate note of the buyer's name and address details. If you are selling to a motor trader you can find more information using the link below. Two part registration document V5 If you have a two part registration document, complete the lower part headed 'notification of sale or transfer', detach it and post it at once to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR. This will not result in the issue of a new registration certificate, but if you do not do this, you may receive enquiries about the car's subsequent use. Give the buyer the top part of the registration document and, if the vehicle is being sold privately, remind the buyer that DVLA must be informed at once that they have got the vehicle. Three part registration document V5 If you have a three part registration document you must complete the V5 blue section, both you and the buyer must sign it and send it immediately to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA. You are also required to give the buyer the properly completed V5/2 green section. However, if you sell the vehicle to a 'motor trader' (see notes on back of registration document for definition) you must complete the V5/3 red section, obtain the details and signature of the motor trader and post it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD. Both the V5 and V5/2 (blue and green) sections (uncompleted) should then be passed to the trader. Registration certificate V5C If you have a registration certificate you must complete section 6 'new keeper or new name/new address details' of the V5C. Both you and the buyer must sign section 8 and send the V5C immediately to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA. You are also required to give the buyer the properly completed V5C/2 green section. However, if you sell the vehicle to a 'motor trader' (see notes on back of the V5C/3 for definition) you must complete the V5C/3 yellow section, obtain the details and signature of the motor trader and post it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD. Both the V5C and V5C/2 (blue and green) sections (uncompleted) should then be passed to the trader. The registration certificate has accompanying guidance notes INS 160. These notes are available for download below. What happens next Once you have informed DVLA, you will receive an automatic acknowledgement letter, within four weeks, confirming the discharge of liability for your vehicle. Please allow four weeks to receive the letter before contacting the DVLA. More useful links

Cheers for that. I rang DVLA and they said to write to the people who sent the letter and let them know when I'd sold it, which I have done, because DVLA don't deal with those people directly. They said it's nothing to do with DVLA. Myself and the shop did what it says on the reg document - both signed the yellow slip and sent it off so hopefully it should all be OK.

Well I lost my log book (which I found last month!) for my GT750 when I had it scrapped, so sent the DVLA a letter just saying I don't own it anymore and they where fine with that. Sent me back a letter saying they got mine and that I was no longer the owner, so I imagine you should be fine.

I had pretty much the same thing when I left for the states. DVLA letter turned up at my parents house, so they opened it, just phoned them up and sorted it over the phone, No worries. May be worth giving DVLA a bell then you know it's sorted and aren't relying on the post.

Hiya,
I rang DVLA and they said to write to the continuous registration people directly because DVLA don't deal with them. They weren't very helpful really. I replied to the letter on friday telling them that I sold it and DVLA should be aware of that because we filled out the paperwork so I'm hoping it'll be OK. I hate things like this ![]() Cheers Amanda |

Nice that we pay through the nose for a public body that f**ks everything up then passes the blame and takes no responsibility. Sigh.
Best of luck. |

I sold a van that had the same problem, let them know who I sold it to, gat a letter saying I was clear. On another note, when I bought the SV, it had no logbook, didn't know it costs £25 to get a new one now.

I sold/part ex my CBR with the dealer a month or so ago and since I have received a letter from the DVLA acknowledging the sale etc! Never seen that before but pleased in the knowledge that the CBR's new owner is registered as such and if I were to receive any fines on it I have paperwork to confirm. Good Luck, I always worry about these things when selling a motor
