Default Transmission/clutch problem

My 2003 SV650S is jumping out of gear in 1st and 2nd. It goes into gear, but when accelerating, the connection between the engine and rear tire skips for a small fraction of a second. It is very jerky as it reconnects the drive train and makes the bike dangerous in those two gears.

It doesn't do it in the higher gears.

I bought the bike used a month ago. It won't go into 1st gear from a stop. I have to put it in 2nd and then it will go into 1st. Goes into 1st okay while slowing for a stop.

I had just done a two thousand mile ride round-trip to Phoenix and it started the day after the trip. Temperatures were 115 degrees on much of the trip and I added a quart of oil during the course of the mileage.

Anyone ever had a problem like this ?

Any suggestions on a possible fix or how to isolate the problem to a specific cause ?

I'd like to fix it before selling this bike. I like the SV650S very much, enough so that I recently bought a new 2007 model, so I was planning to sell it once I returned from the trip. Located in San Jose, California if you're interested. Asking $3100 after it's fixed, will take less As-Is.
Full Yosh race pipe, RaceTech emulators, frame sliders, good tires, etc.

Thanks,
Frank

To clarify, the problem I'm asking about is when the bike is IN gear, not during the shift.
Thank you,
Frank

Default Re: Transmission/clutch problem

Good Morning.
Assuming your clutch is adjusted correctly, check the gear pedal linkage, & make sure it's moving smoothly, as they're prone to the gear lever mounting bush seizing slightly.
However, as you have trouble selecting 1st gear from neutral, you could have a problem with the internal selector mechanism behind the clutch, or worse still, a problem with the selector forks inside the gearbox.

Cheers.
