Default Rearsets falling appart?

See photo:

Hard to see, but it's the white stuff. It's seems to have got under the paint. The big white patch next to the heel plate is the worst - it was about 5mm deep

Is this road salt or something collecting on them, or are they corroding into oblivion before my very eyes?

It does look like oxidisation damage doesn't it? As if the anodising's not held.

Doesn't look good. If I rubbed them down and polished them, what would the likely outcome be? Would that get rid of the oxidisation, or make the whole lot more prone to oxidising?
