I need some new wheels for my Transalp banger and these have come up on a Tranny forum. He hasn't given me a price yet but apparently they haven't got any rot.
Can anyone with experience with spokes care to tell me what they think of the condition and more importantly if they can be cleaned up and what I should offer for them? I only really need the rear but if the front's good enough I'll have that too. Is there something I can take with me to rub the wheel with to see if they'll come up? Prices with/without tyres and discs please. Oh yeah, they're off a 2001 Tranny. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

depends how much you need them? & how much you are willing to pay
how old are they they look as if they will clean up nice make sure the wheels are not buckled, and all spokes are tight. do they include discs & sprocket tyres? £100? |

They'd be worth more if they had Spokey Dokeys

Hovis, they are as old as a 2001 motorbike! He eh e he he.
Don't know if they're coming with sprocket etc but I don't need them. I was thinking a ton. I do need the rear quite bad as my rear has rotted so that a few spokes are ready to fall out. Haven't even bothered putting it in for MOT yet. |

Afternoon all.
Good Transalp wheels are a bit like the proverbial hens teeth, as the D.I.D. (I think) rims are prone to corroding. Which has been a problem with Jap alloy rims right back to the 70's. The only way to check them is with the tyres off I'm afraid, as more often than not the corrosion starts from the inside, around the nipples (MATRON). I have seen rims that look perfect from the outside, & yet are more than halfway rotted through from the inside. Age is not a factor as to whether they're corroded or not, I've encountered 25 year old rims that are like new, & 4 year old ones that have had it! I guess this is what occurs when you build bikes from metal that was probably a coke can in a former life ![]() Cheers. |
