He's quite right you know they are pretty much the best roads we've ridden on.

Nigel - Samantha and I got back fine yesterday morning, I'm sure she'll be emailing you or Marion shortly. Thanks again we had a great time with the two of you.

We'll be putting a trip report just as soon as the photos are sorted out, I think my arm's just about recovered from Buster using it as a chew toy!

If anyone is planning a trip down that way staying with Marion and Nigel is a must, beer in hand on arrival, great advice on routes and a friendly husky to play with.

James

Is there a frugal way to get to the south of France / northern Spain that does not involve crossing at Dover and riding all the way?

Santander and Bilbao look like good ferry routes but everytime I check the pricing it's over £300 return per bike and rider.

How frugal do you want it?

we are going Ports/Caen - Santander/Plymouth - Solo cabin on the way back.. approx £230..

If you dispense with the cabin - £151..

That sounds much better, what time of year is best? I'd want to avoid the hot weather and peak tourist traffic. Sept? May?

Those were my parameters too. We sail from Portsmouth on June 1 and from Santander on June 9. End week of may and first half of June includes no French or Spanish school or public holidays so there shouldn't be many tourists about, weather should be temperate, and accommodation should be plentiful.. (I hope )

hey guys i know the ferry to bilbao/santander sounds expensive BUT consider this the calais dover ferry costs how much now 75 pounds?? i really have no idea nowadays. add to that toll charges to the south they come to nearly 100 euros each way! add also 1000 miles each way on petrol that is roughly 10 tank fulls at what 10 pounds per tank full? plus snacks enroute plus an over night stop mid france say 70 euros inc a meal and what have we got?
in big terms 475 pounds the return trip, all of a sudden the 300 odd for the ferry to spain doesnt seem to bad is that with a passenger?

No, maybe not that expensive, but I'd rather spend 3 days riding than 3 days stuck on a boat. If you stay off the boring Peage there are fantastic roads through France, and the Dover ferry can be got for around £40.
