Thinking about fitting a set of oxford hot grips(christmas present from last year).
Been putting it off as everybody tells me that real bikers don't need them. I love the country (Scotland) I live in, but unfortunately the summer is about 2 weeks long, which should make scottish bikers an exception to the above rule. Anyway, is there much work involved? Should I even bother? Any feedback would be helpful. |

first post eh? well hello........pop over to idle banter and introduce your self
i like them.........quite easy to fit, the only problem i had was the wires are too long, so it was all cable tied around by the headstock, which looks untidy, i did not want to cut the wires as i would have to buy all new connecters. (any one got any suggestions?) also its best to wire them to the ignition, rather than the battery, so you cant leave them on, although the new models turn them selves off...... another thing, the grips are plasticy and a lot harder than the standard rubber grips. but they do help to keep your hands warm, i found my thumbs got a bit cold though Last edited by hovis; 12-04-08 at 09:07 AM. |

just out of intrest, what bike have you got?
as if its faired, you can kind of hide the cables, as they are far too long cutting them would be the best option |

Welcome to the madhouse!
I fitted the grips, and the hardest part was putting them on the bars. Once they were on they worked great. Then it got so cold that I wore 2 pairs of gloves (thermal inners, and waterproof winter gloves). My hands were so warm that I rarely used the heated grips, and so gave them to Hovis. Which reminds me, did those grips solve the issue on the curvy Hovis? |

The good news is you can ignore those everybodys, they are bufoons!
After you've been over to IB to say hello, pop into Ecosse and have a shufty at the next rideout thread, then straight over to the Glencoe Massacre as per my sig. Busy busy busy! ![]() |

Firstly, those who say real bikers dont need them are talking codswallop. Real bikers have heated grips and handlebar muffs; this way, no matter what the air temp is, you can always ALWAYS wear summer gloves
![]() Theres not much work invovled, but be aware that they are UNIVERSAL: designed to fit everything, but fit nothing perfectly. You'll have to make certain modifications and everything, but only minor things, mostly to the throttle tube. Matt |

Well I have heard it`s best to route the cables to the left hand side as there is a hole in the frame that these go through quite nicely , the other thing is that the throttle tube may need the flange trimming off the end , apart from that my only recommendation is to take a can of hairspray (mrs or mums) and spray the bars with it . This will help the grips slip onto the bars , I use pledge myself , works a treat and once dried it`ll let the grips stick to the bars/throttle tube . In fact , screw it , I`m gonna go and fit mine now as well

It's a fiddly job I felt, but 100% worth it. Having warm hands makes all the difference. The main thing is trimming the inside edge of the throttle slider with a stanley knife so it fits perfectly, and we lifted the tank and ran the cables under there.
I use mine all the time now. |

Well mine are now fitted and I`m quietly pleased with myself , just need to source some large heatshrink from work on Monday and my job will be tidily done . Had to trim both ends of the throttle grip to suit the length of the throttle tube , cut a nice chamfer around the inside of both ends of the grip and it no longer fouls on the bar-end and has smooth and free throttle movement
