Why would you want to? Bikes handle better on skinnier tyres and the tyres are cheaper too

I'd invite you to read John Robinson's Motorcycle Chassis Tuning, don't buy a new copy as its not the most modern of books but the theory and science hold true. You need to decide between how much outright grip you actually need and how nimble you want the bike to be. If you have a bike with 160bhp+ then you might opt for a wider rear tyre, but a SV putting out 70bhp? Probably not necessary. A bike with a 180 on the rear will need to lean over further for the same rate of turn as a bike with a 140 section, so you will be able to carry higher corner speed on a bike with skinnier tyres, this is why 125 and 250 race bikes are the kings of corner speed. (That and light weight) You make a valid point about tyre choice but modern road tyres are so good, you can get excellent tyres off the shelf. If you are racing, then the tyres available for lighter race bikes will suit I'm sure. Just don't use race tyres on the road. The other issue to take into consideration is wheel weight. Lighter wheels will transform your bike. If the GSXR wheels are lighter in weight then that might even out the advantage of skinnier tyres. Triumph Speed Fours were some of the lightest OEM wheels I ever came across. Like everything in bike tuning, its a compromise. I used to race a Hornet 600 in the Hornet Cup, Sub-600 Streetfighters and even in European Endurance races. It wore a 180/55/17 on the rear as standard but the wets for this bike came in a 165 width and the bike was much nicer to ride. It turned in quicker and cornered faster. If you are racing, don't follow fashion, fit what works. Hope this helps. Rich |

remember you have to play with the tyre profiles.
if you want to run a 180 with the standard front tyre on the SV then you will need a 180x55 if you run a 180x60 then you will have to increase the front to a 120x70. personally i see no benefit to running a larger back tyre apart from posing. on the standard rubber the SV is already very capable and you can grind the pegs using the full width of tread. one thing to remember, if you dont inform your insurance you have modified the rear wheel you run the risk of invalidating your insurance in the event of an accident. |

Good brakes, good tyres and good suspension, all set up to suit you and the way you ride. When you start outriding them, then start and look at up-grades.....
