Default 2nd gear woes

Any you guys shed light on this.

Going from first to second it keeps knocking into neutral about 3 out of every 5 changes. It's getting very annoying now. Just wanted advice from the .org before I take it back to the dealer.

Just had it's 4k service.

Not knowing anything of the bikes history, you say "knocking" do you mean jumping out of gear when you apply power ? it's normally a ware issue (or abuse) on the selector fork dogs or selector cam, although if only 4k this wound be unusual , has it always done it ?

Cheers Mark.

Time to check the basics maybe ?

Everytime I have had gear changes woes on my SV it was one of the following

1. Chain Tension.
2. Over filled engine oil.
3. Dirt & Grime on the Gear lever mechanism.

I've had similar symptoms as you when I had a slack chain, but as you have had your bike serviced regularly it probably isnt this.

I'd definately check the oil level though. However if its over filled it normally manifests itself in a sticky or stiff gear lever.

It might be something else, but I'd check those things first.

Bad description...

When I'm changing from 1st to 2nd it goes into neutral instead of 2nd. Its been on and off for the past couple of weeks but the past few days its got really bad. It happens about 3 times out of 5 just now.

I thought it was me at first but I'm definitely feeling as if its clicked into 2nd but its slipped into neutral.

I dont mean to be patronising but are you kicking the gear lever up hard enough? Ive had this problem before, although not as bad as you say, and it was just me being a bit light with the gear lever.

Fizzwheel suggested applying pressure on the lever before you depress the clutch which I tried and works a treat.

My 2p worth!

Check the shift rod and so on for play as well, I reckon... Could have come a little loose, that happened to mine and it meant it wasn't turning the shifter whatsit enough for a clean shift.

What year's yours? I know the more recent ones, 5 and 6 at least, have a different shift star profile which is supposed to stop that- it's based on, ie ripped off, from the factory Pro one. I know when I fitted that to mine it meant no more falsies, despite my crap shifts.

Got to say it sounds like a case of lazy shifting to me, I am also guilty of this and find my bike falling out of 2nd and into neutral as I've not popped it into gear properly.

Adjusting the lever position is also an option to help this.

It's nothing wrong with my gear changing and yes I apply plenty pressure on the lever. I tried slow deliberate changes until the lever wont go any further and still does it. My mate had a go today and it was the same for him.
