White smoke, Oil, Power Loss. Help
2001 | SV650s | 11,500 miles.
Ok, So I was riding into work this morning. I'm in 4th gear cruising at 7800 when I notice my bike lose a bit of power and drop to 7000. I then look behind me and there is a TON of white smoke billowing out of my exhaust. As I pull to the side of the road, the engine died. I lifted the tank and see oil all over the airbox, and everywhere under the tank... Here are my Compression Test Results. They are very high IMHO: Front: 230 Front Oil Added: 245 Rear: 250 Rear Oil Added: 275 Here are some photos: Oil on the underside of the tank: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3298/...795bc5f3_o.jpg Oil on the carbs: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/...4883cd4f_o.jpg More Oil on Carbs: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4059/...0946956f_o.jpg Oil on front plug: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3614/...cd4eec79_o.jpg Oil on front plug and some sort of grit on the boot side: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2421681...49792/sizes/o/ Oil in the air box: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2421681...7623843776691/ Oil in the air box and filter: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2421681...7623843776691/ Thanks in advance! Added a teaspoon of oil to the cylinder and then recheck the compression to see what the change was.

Small amount of oil added to the top of the piston to seal the rings, thereby increasing the compression---old trick often used on older design diesel engines with oil plungers and decompressor valves.

for the oil start simple check every hose that oil runs through for being split or loose/not connected. look for cheap options first.

OIL----has the engine oil level dropped drastically and you say white smoke so check your water level. I would imagine if you burnt that much oil you would have extreme burnt oil smell from the rear.No oil smell and pure white smoke would indicate water ingress

Re: White smoke, Oil, Power Loss. Help
White "smoke" is normally steam from coolant getting into the cylinders.
From the pics, it looks more like green coolant to me, especially in the airbox and on the end of the spark plug, not oil. In which case, maybe head gasket or cracked head ? |

Re: White smoke, Oil, Power Loss. Help
The coolant is bright blue, so that's why I thought it was Oil on the plugs and in the air-box and not coolant. But who knows, maybe there was a minor amount of contamination between the oil and coolant that lead to the greenish color.. I know its usually "milky".
All-in-all the "liquid" that was all over the cylinder, airbox, and bike was more of an oil consistency, but again, im not certain what it is at this point. I checked the hoses, they all checked out OK. I cleaned the bike and checked for visual cracks, nothing. The coolant and oil levels seem to be fine (which is weird because there was such an explosion of oil). I drained a little of the coolant it it seemed clean. The oil in the window looks brand-new. Any thoughts? Do you guys think it's time to bite the bullet and do a visual inspection? |
