Re: new language
I can't speak much french but what about those rosetta stone dvd things? not sure how effective they are... if not a personal tutor wouldn't be a bad idea if you could afford it.

Once had a friend who spoke fluent french..she went on holiday to France with her family and was about to order at the cafe when her dad interrupted and said her
'I'll handle this' Then to the waitress shouts in that half deaf retarded voice english people do at foreign people 'TWO TEAS PLEASE'

Avez vous une 'cuppa'!!
Seriously, try learning the basics. Things that could be important. Asking directions, ordering food, or asking prices etc etc depends where you go in france, but generally speaking the further down south you go the more inclined they are to meet you half way with the language barrier. Yes they can speak Anglais, but they won't let you know that until they've heard yoy try your hardest to make an effort I can speak very well once I'm out there, but they speak so fast its hard to keep up sometimes. But then my best mate from Hull has lived there for the last four years, and couldn't speak a jot before she landed. She covers up the mistakes for me
