Does this seem like excessive movement in the chain?
Up on my abba stand just rolling in first.
New chain so no tight links. Wheel alignment spot on according to Bibios plates. Sent from my XT1580 using Tapatalk Last edited by tom_e; 07-08-16 at 02:53 PM. |

To be honest it isn't a fair or sensible test. Put it on the side stand and you should have 20-30mm of movement. You could then stick it back on your Abba stand and see what it is there to make future checking for tight spots easier like wot I do.

The chain tension is fine on the side stand, it just looked like a lot of bouncing and moving to me.

its fine. the bike is a v-twin so not as smooth at tickover as say an inline4.

As they say, not really a meaningful test. If you stop the engine, put it in gear, then vigorously jerk the wheel back and forth it'll do something similar, which is effectively what is happening when you run the bike in gear on the stand.
Don't have the chain adjusted with too little slack, it will tighten up as the suspension compresses (tightest spot typically around half travel). More slack is better than too little. If you're really interested, drop the suspension links off and lift the wheel through full travel and check the chain slack throughout the travel. I usually do this on any bike to see what the tightest position is, set the chain to minimal slack at that height, then see what slack it has when on the sidestand (or on a paddock stand or however I intend to check it in future).

Cheers for the replies, just seemed to be kicking about a lot more than it had in the past. Rode it to work this morning and all felt fine so I'll file it under my worrying over nothing pile.

Chains bounce like this, completely normal and nothing to do with engine characteristic.
