1999 sv650s starting issue
Hi guys I'm new here!
Recently picked up a sv guy said he went to start it up one day and engine felt like it was holding back, but he drove it anyway so he's driving it there was a back fire and the bike slowed down he then had to push it home the gear selection seems stiff an non retractable maybe the detent spring is causing issues? He said he couldn't get it into neutral but I managed to and when I spin the starter motor I just get a clunk sound it's not a click from the solenoid though it's genuinely from the starter like its jammed or something bikes done 17 k any ideas would be great guys as I'm lost... You suspect the starter, so start there. Take it off the bike and try jumping it so see if it spins up. How is the battery condition? The motor hasn't seized up has it? Can you turn the engine over by rocking the bike in gear? You could also try push starting it

Re: 1999 sv650s starting issue
Rock the bike back and forward in gear in case starter jammed. Deffo need to check battery, can you jump it from a car battery ? Guy on here had an SV that would not start or even turn over after bike had fallen over because of a lot of oil in cylinder, not saying that is the case here but may have water in cylinder due bad gasket. How is oil level ? If it ran too low on oil maybe engine tightening up.

Re: 1999 sv650s starting issue
There was a recent thread about a sticky starter motor + poor non starting. Take it off and give the internals a clean

Re: 1999 sv650s starting issue
bad gear selection is usually the gear lever pivot shaft needing lubed but can also be rider fault in not letting the foot relax/move away from the lever while shifting.
bad starting.. is usually a duff battery. make sure that the battery is fully charged and keeping a charge FIRST before ripping things apart. |
