Replacing steering bearings
Done some searching on here and the other sv forums.
Plenty about how to remove old bearings (2000 curvey) But putting in the new... All I can find is 'tap' in with hollow tube over stem. Does this apply to both bottom bearing parts ? And the top parts - how do you get them into the frame without the special tool ? Intending to use these: http://shop.marksman-ind.com/steerin...004-1297-p.asp Thanks Mark |

Re: Replacing steering bearings
Best thing to do is when you remove the outer races of the old bearings keep them and use them to tap in the new outer races with a hammer (make sure you do this gently and evenly).
The inner race of your bottom bearing just goes onto your bottom yoke and when you have fitted that place the top bearing in and fasten it all together. It's basically out with old parts in with the new. It's just getting out the old parts which is the problem. I think the pipe trick is for installing the bottom inner race as it can be very difficult due to the stem Last edited by vardypeeps; 10-02-09 at 10:31 AM. |

Re: Replacing steering bearings
It's a pain I got a mate to do mine. He had a special (expensive) tool which looked a bit like a giant's whisk. It put pressure on the outsides of the race and you tapped the top with a hammer.

Re: Replacing steering bearings
Surely you only need to replace the cups if they're knackered? If they're still smooth then I would imagine new bearings would suffice!

Sorry, didn't notice you were fitting tapered rollers.

Re: Replacing steering bearings
Grind down o/d of old bearing, use it as a drift. Put new bearing in freezer. Warm headstock up and use grease.

Re: Replacing steering bearings
Yes. Most of work is in taking it apart so there's no point doing half a job.
